Sunday, April 10
Is April the cruelest month? If you're a Republican, you might think your party was breaking apart, starting from the top. If you're on the left, you might wonder why the opposition isn't making more of this moment. Today we go outside the box to get out of the political boxing ring.
We start with ELLEN WILLIS author of, "Don't Think: Smile!" and Director of NYU Journalism School's Cultural Reporting and Criticism program. She and Laura talk about the "Bush Women" and how the right's hijacking the work of the Feminist movement. Then AMIRA HASS, the pioneering Israeli journalist and author of "Drinking the Sea at Gaza: Days and Nights in a Land Under Siege" and "Reporting from Ramallah: An Israeli Journalist in an Occupied Land." Plus GREG PALAST, investigative journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller, "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" and MARK LEVINE, host of "The Inside Scoop," on WAGE AM-1200, on the latest news. And ELAINE PETROCELLI, owner of San Francisco's Book Passage bookstore, on what's flying off the shelf.

Aiden Delgado, an Army Reservist in the 320th Military Police Company, served in Iraq from April 1st , 2003 through April 1st, 2004. After spending six months in Nasiriyah in Southern Iraq, he spent six months helping to run the now-infamous Abu Ghraib prison outside of Baghdad.
The handsome 23-year-old mechanic was a witness to widespread, almost daily, U.S. war crimes in Iraq. His story contains new revelations about ongoing brutality at Abu Ghraib, information yet to be reported in national media.

I think the right is using religion to undo decades of work in feminism and civil rights. They want to protect the traditional status quo; they don't really believe in democracy or want everyone to have an equal shot at the American dream.
If you think about Christianity, it's all about hierarchy, much as the right is. There are those at the top who are the "best" (god and the rich), and then the Pope and those on the "rich track", and then further down the hierarchy are the rest of us.
Religion and the right have to maintain the hierarchy in order to maintain their own power, so the combination of both in politics is very dangerous, IMO. Not a culture that celebrates individual differences and diversity.
If you say anything about how the Pope's policies were bad for women, you're a bad person.

George Miller ( D-Rep.)
"Organize and force us to catch up."
The challenge to the electoral malfeasance in Ohio provided an early example. Inside the Beltway, protesting the President's electors was unimaginable.
But progressive organizers, together with third-party activists, liberal lawyers, Internet muckrakers and civil rights groups, kept the heat on. Representative John Conyers responded with a report detailing the outrages in Ohio, where the Secretary of State--shades of Katherine Harris--was co-chair of the Bush campaign. The Rev. Jesse Jackson and others called on senators to support progressive House legislators who were demanding a debate.
When Senator Barbara Boxer stood up, the public learned more about the shabby state of our democracy and the need for drastic electoral reform.
The lesson is clear: When progressives move, Democrats will follow.
"Don't expect this place to lead," says Representative George Miller. "Organize and force us to catch up."

Do you know what's really HILARIOUS ?
If the PDA hadn't busted the Ohio FIX wide open, the public would have most likely slept through the OLYMPIC scale raping of the NYC Metro taxpayers and snored though the minutia of handing over what remains of "West Side Story" territory over to the Res/Mitnich/born again Koch's without even turning to prevent bed sores.
Funny how the NATIONAL mindset manipulation by the NEOCONS reminds us that BEDBUGS really do bite and righteous/green exterminators are essential to keep the melting pot from rusting through.
Gentrification is nice, but if you annihilate diversity using unethical practices, it will come back to bite you, if not draw and quarter, tear you limb from limb without malice, prejudice or remorse ( Who's Rodney King? ).
What's the PDA you ask?

Foreign policy and feminism ? I can not remember any women from the DNC and foreign policy. They had 8 years to put a people in charge even a black or hispanic one. My opinion Condolezza Rice is a presidental candidate 2008. And if the DNC get not black people in positions the elections are lost mid 2006.
Laura Bush took an ordinary photo date in favour of the republican women in Kabul.
Bill Clinton was a desaster for the DNC especially in personal politics.

Is there any way to defend Kate O'Beirne ( BIO http://tinyurl.com/5jtax ) for speaking on behalf of DeLay's transgressions on Meet The Pres today?
The published Transcript for April 10 below, IS NOT WHAT I HEARD ON THE REBROADCAST ON WLIB AT 6PM THIS EVENING. It's almost as if she had the chance add third person reverences when she said "I" during her appearance.
MR. RUSSERT: "A 3rd DeLay Trip Under Scrutiny. 1997 Russia Visit Reportedly Backed by Business Interests." And then The New York Times the same day: "Political Groups Paid 2 Relatives Of House Leader Over $500,000 Since 2001. DeLay Wife and Daughter Got Money for Work Tied to Campaigns."
This prompted Tom DeLay to say this. He "angrily dismissed [the] newspaper accounts...In an interview with CNN...He called the article `just another seedy attempt by the liberal media to embarrass me'
MS. O'BEIRNE: I believe that he's been singled out, and his colleagues agree. Trips funded by private groups that are not uncommon. The story this week about Tom DeLay's wife and sister--and daughter being paid about $50,000 a year in private campaign funds to work on the campaign. That is not an uncommon practice. That particular story about Tom DeLay's family was reported two years ago, and so they highlighted that story as a perfect example of the kind of attacks that are being made against Tom DeLay.
MR. RUSSERT: Is Congressman DeLay accurate in this attack on the judiciary about Schiavo?
MS. O'BEIRNE: Well, what bothers him and I, I think he has quite a bit of company in this concern on Capitol Hill, is that Congress passed a law asking the federal court, only asking them, Tim, to take another look at the facts.
That single judge, Greer, you cited is the only one who ever had the factual finding and, of course, it was given real deference as that case was appealed up through the states and the federal courts. They wanted a new look at the facts to make sure federal rights, which we all have under the 14th Amendment in her case, Terri Schiavo, weren't violated. Many members are extremely bothered at what they consider the judges' flicking away the congressional law.
One judge, in dissent, one federal judge, chastised his two colleagues for doing that, explaining, you know, "Congress didn't pass this and have the president sign it for no reason. We do owe real deference to this federal law." So I think he has plenty of company in being bothered by that.

In February, we were allowed to try various hacking techniques into a real election system. To our surprise, the method used in our October simulation did not work.
However, another method did work. The hack that did work was unsophisticated enough that many high school students would be able to achieve it. This hack altered the election by 100,000 votes, leaving no trace at all in the central tabulator program. It did not appear in any audit log. The hack could have been executed in the November 2004 election by just one person.
This hack stunned the officials who were observing the test.

>> Speaking of Riverbend—the Baghdad woman blogger—
Has anyone else noticed how we use the noun "woman" as an adjective, and don't do the same with the word "man" (we always use the adjective "male") ?
http://myfugue.blogspot.com/2005/03/woman-used-as-adjective.html
I've heard "woman" used as an adjective in movies from the 1930's, so it's not a new phenomenon. In patriarchal societies, men are seen as the norm, the default. So often we specify gender when the individual in question is a woman, but not when it's a man. For example, if someone is talking about a doctor, they would assume you know it's a man and therefore they wouldn't specify gender. But if it's a woman, they would say "the woman doctor".
But that's not what I'm trying to say. What I want to know is, when we DO specify gender, why do we use a noun as an adjective when the individual is a woman? If people were simply trying to specify gender, they would say "the female doctor", not "the woman doctor".
I'm guessing that it started when women starting moving into non-traditional fields and activities. Today people don't even think twice; they don't even seem aware that they are using a noun for an adjective. I've even heard sentences such as "women doctors now outnumber male doctors" - totally non-parallel forms in the same sentence!
But originally, I think that by using the noun "woman" instead of the adjective "female", the speaker was using a code to indicate his disapproval. Think about the tone usually used when someone says "woman driver". I think that's probably what was conveyed back then whenever the noun "woman" was used as an adjective.
And another feminist issue I have - think about the Viagra commercials and how the couple thinks they can't have sex if the man has an erection problem -
http://myfugue.blogspot.com/2005/04/sexism-in-sex.html
Imagine if we had a matriarchy where sex was decreed to be men performing oral sex on women. Occasionally the women would want intercourse and the male would have an orgasm, but it was considered foreplay and not a real part of sex. Most often, sex would involve men performing oral sex on women and nothing more. Women would have an orgasm and the men would just be happy to satisfy their partners. That doesn't seem so fair, doesn't it?

There were hundreds of thousands of protesters in Iraq over the weekend demanding the USA leave Iraq. The new president of Iraq, a Kurd, wants the USA to stay. We are building permanent bases in Iraq, yet today Joe Biden said the USA will lessen the troop involvement in Iraq. Maybe Greg Palast can help sort out the real story of future US intentions in Iraq in relation to the oil our government wants and the fact that a large amount of Iraquis want us out.

I saw an ad on TV for the NY Post. They are promoting a 5-part glossy magazine on Pope JPII to run next week. Will it mention his opposition to the invasion of Iraq? Is it being used as a cheap stunt to boost circulation?
I guess we already know the answers to those questions.

Oh that wacky KTLK, now it has Laura (crossing fingers for last hour). Though its non-functional web site has something about Jesse Jackson starting the 17th.
Not that the web site has ever been right yet. It still has Unfiltered.

You find some real gems in the "leaked" Diebold e-mail. The machine didn't work the day it was demonstrated to the CA secretary of state. Some piece of hardware was jammed, but nobody tried to use it so they didn't notice.
Sec. of state's tech guy at the time reported that the Diebold was the only one he hadn't been able to hack by cracking default passwords. He'd gotten into one of the other ones from a Palm Pilot.

Dean Outlines Plans for Support in States
Fri Apr 8, 3:52 PM ET
WASHINGTON - Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said Friday that the national party will invest almost half a million dollars in state parties in Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota and West Virginia.
All four states were won by President Bush in the 2004 presidential election.
"This is just the beginning," Dean told state Democratic chairs at a meeting of their association in Little Rock, Ark. "We will announce additional investments in the weeks ahead."
Dean has been to 14 states in his two months as chairman and has pledged to build state parties all across the nation, including in states dominated by Republicans.

The only way to vote is with a pen and a piece of paper. That's how we should vote and civil servants should count them. Altho the USPS is now a quasi-govt corp, they could provide enough clerks and carriers to do the count.
That's how they do it in most of Europe. It takes a week to get the official results but the exit polls are never wrong!
Sorry for veering from the on-air topic.
