HEY- who you calling the most liberal senator in Washington?

By Vanessa Silverton-Peel
If you've heard it once, you've heard it a million times: Barack Obama had the most liberal voting record in the Senate in 2007. Joining us to punch a few holes in that theory is Joshua Grossman, president of Progressive Punch, a man who knows a thing or two about political ratings. He joins us in the third hour. In hour two, we're joined by our Man of the Moment, Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director of Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America to celebrate the passage of the GI Bill (can I get a little woo-hoo!) And, at the top of hour three, Political Guru, David Bender, host of Politically Direct with David Bender joins the Maddow live to talk Barack Obama: is he moving to the center? is he merely being an effective politician? is he truly following his soul? AND, in there somewhere, we will be taking your calls so, if you want to get on the line, call us: 866 303-2270

AS HEARD ON THE SHOW

Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, whose likeness is being cast in bronze for the Iowa Hall of Pride, will be sculpted in a more gooey medium in August at the Iowa State Fair.

Butter Shawn Johnson will share the spotlight with the butter cow in the Agriculture Building Aug. 7-17. Butter sculptor Sarah Pratt of West Des Moines plans to incorporate a balance beam into Johnson’s pose, and possibly an American flag.

Question about MSNBC

At some point Rachel mentioned that MSNBC asks her to take off her glasses when on air. Since then I've been paying attention and noticed that no woman wears glasses on air, but men do.

Rachel is there a "glasses" ceiling at MSNBC? Feminist minds would like to know.

race to whitehouse

I know that air america is looking for more exposure and having Rachel upfront is a great idea, but I think her program is suffering because of it. I miss the full three hours of incitful dialog and the less frantic approach.

Can't complain here

I am working from home, and I usually listen online in these instances. But work's network went down and I got to watch the show. She did great! I agree that it really sounds bad on radio, though. Does anyone know if she'll be in for Gregory all week long?

I agree goldntrone!

You're absolutely right. She used to have the best political radio show after Mike Malloy but the quality of her show is suffering.

I liked 'Race for the White House' initially but it's taking Rachel off the radio and that's where she does her best work.

RACHEL....move over to Nova-M radio and give us the best radio lineup in the country (Randi, Mike and Rachel).

Hopefully Sam Seder will be there soon since AAR has their head up their @$$ and have not given him his own show but instead gave it to Kuby.

But she wants to be on TV.

Rachel has mentioned a few times that she would like to have a TV show so that she can reach a larger audience, and hopefully convert them to the wise ways of the left.

Things would be different with her own show.

Right now, any time you see Rachel on TV she's doing someone else's show. If she got her own show it would have more of her personal touch. Not entirely, TV is a bigger expense and is going to be more tightly managed by higher ups. However, she would make it more of her own thing than she can when filling in for David Bender.

Faith based initiative

Someone said the faith grouops were the only ones getting anything done after Katrina.. With that statement it should have been mentioned bushes policies gives the money to these groups (so it is really our tax money that should get the credit.. not faith groups).. Another important issue is that other groups wanting to help were being turned away by our govt (acting like a theocracy)..

Not to mention the fact that...

...half the National Guard units were overseas, instead of in their home states aiding in disaster relief.

And which services were they providing?

I was working for an HIV/AIDS agency a while back and the big issue is funding. It's drying like a slug in a salt pond. Is this money going to faith-based groups? I don't know of any faith based group in the area that provides the services provided by the local government and non-profits.

So this begs the question, what kinds of gaps are going to exist because the $$ is going to faith-based groups? Would an HIV+ person be intimidated to receive services and aid from a faith based group?

And btw, it was Gene Robinson who said that it was the faith-based groups who did most of the work after Katrina.

SURGE MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ... Deja vu Laurence of Arabia HA!

How is it that Harwood equates 30K+ more GI's, aka the SURGE (actually escalation), to the fluctuating body count and gentrification (ethnic cleansing, actually GENOCIDE) that the DoD MOCKINGBIRD "Generals" describe as a success per reduced violence, which has been a result of BRIBING former insurgents to pick targets other than US as Patraeus-Odierno reduce patrols, thus exposure to EVIL DOERS.

The "SURGE" was meant to put more boots on the streets to stabilize the situation in an effort to encourage their parliament to take charge of their own destiny by ordering their disparate factions to get along, or kill the militant jihadist minorities themselves. Paying off the badguys to stand down, was that done by their leadership, REALLY?

The success has been in reversing the NATIONALIZATION of Iraqi Petroleum by signing contracts with multinational OIL infrastructure management corporations and in their parliament NOT ordering BLACKWATER & US GI's off their soil, thus embracing the prospect of their country being OCCUPIED indefinitely. That was done via CASH INCENTIVES, NOT via STOP LOSS EXTENDED TOURS under Gates' tutelage.

Free trade?

While talking about free trade, maybe someone should mention the problems in Columbia we would be supporting financially.. Is it Columbia where workers who try to organize into unions get kidnapped and then have their feet cut off? When we talk about free trade we Americans should set an example fro the world in terms of worker rights, standard of living and environmental protections.. Instead all we americans seem to be intewrested in is exploitiaion of cheap laber to make the wealthy even richer..

Don't leave out immigrants

During the Race to the White House both yesterday and today Rachel alluded that Latino voters in the US would be more willing to vote for McCain after his trip to CoLOMbia receives coverage in the Spanish language press -- sorry ColUmbia is in DC and New York (university), and spelling Colombia as Columbia is a pet peeve of mine.

I've worked for a number of years with immigration rights and one thing I know... monolingual Spanish speakers understand VERY well that the increase of undocumented immigrants is due to NAFTA. This policy benefited large companies and hurt little people on both sides of the border.

Quite honestly, if Rachel is right, that if McCain is hoping for a boost with Latinos by promoting free trade with Colombia.... hmmmm... not so sure myself. Maybe it will help boost the deal with Colombians who are in Colombia and have not faced the free-trade aftermath that Mexico did. But for those of us here, it is a waste of time and money.... *IF* that is the strategy.

don't forget

British Columbia-the most important Columbia of them all

Well yes!

And possible the only Columbia I would move to... and almost did a few years back. And no, it had nothing to do with me being p****d off at US politics. I kinda almost had to. But that is a long story that I'll save for another occasion. :)

Re: ColOmbia, not ColUmbia

mdonayre, thanks for pointing out the typo. Also a big pet peeve of mine, for the univ. reason.

not just Americans and Brits dying in Afghanistan

Besides the many Afghani citizens dying in the war against Afghanistan, many Canadians have died, including several this month, but Rachel never mentions them.

Maybe she doesn't want to upset her mom

We know she listens.....

It won't be overturned

Prop 8 is going to be on the ballot. No doubt about that.

The good thing is that most young people are in favor of gay marriage, and it's expected that a lot of them will come out to vote for Obama in Calif. BUT! Young people are unlikely to vote the ENTIRE ballot. They just vote the top of the ticket. If you are under 25, live and vote in California, please make sure you vote the entire ballot, and vote NO on Prop 8.

If you know someone in California, please tell them to vote no on Prop. 8!

Thank you!

Obama's rightward lurches

Perhaps he thinks he's in NJ, where multiple right turns = left turn?

Seriously, this faith-based initiative plan disturbs me. Support of the new anti-FISA bill, now this? I'm getting cautiously leery.

Cap'n, you'll be pleased to hear that a colleague of mine (History - Jeffersonian scholar) plans to vote the Socialist ticket.

I used to be a socialist...

...until I found there wasn't any money in it.

Obama has made some "odd" turns

Obama's stance on so many issues has turned a hard right (hardly centrists as many proclaim) and has made me leery of this candidate of change.

I have lost my "zest" for his campaign, but am holding on and hoping this is merely him trying to find his way in the general. Let us hope...

Dr. Maddow disconnected??!!??

What happened to the "Ask Dr. Maddow" hotline? I tried to call 212-871-8173 and got a message that the number has been disconnected!

Hmmm

Huh. Come to think of it, I don't remember hearing an Ask Dr. Maddow segment Monday and Tuesday.

Congress' Accomplishments?

I caught the first part of Rachel’s show while driving tonight. Rachal commented upon the fact that in the last election the Democrats received the strong nod from the voting populace to stop the war. She recounted how that hasn’t actually happened. THEN she said the Democrats did do one good thing: Nominated Barack Obama…. RACHAEL!!! As far as I know, the voters did that too. Can we really say that the elected officials, Congress, are responsible for the Obama nomination? Perhaps elected representatives' endorsements influenced certain voters, however, I don’t think Obama’s presumed nomination is a chit for Congress, not a mark for their charge by the voters. Nope.

Rachel is mixing Democrats at large and Democrats elected and using them interchangably and that isn't working in this instance.

Special duds for July 4 MLB games

I guess I'll be seeing these flag-inspired hats when I'm at Yankee Stadium on the 4th for Yankees-Red Sox.

http://www.uniwatchblog.com/2008/06/23/seeing-stars-and-stripes/

An interesting discussion broke out in Saturday’s comments section. First, a few people noticed a bunch of star-spangled caps being sold on MLB.com. They look like fashion caps, but, as several readers noted, they’re being sold in the “Men’s Authentic” category and the product pages all say, “Authentic cap worn on-field to show support for the Welcome Back Veterans Foundation.”

Welcome Back Veterans, it turns out, is an official MLB charity devoted to vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and reader Jonathon Binet quickly found this little item from Friday, which says “Welcome Back Veterans will be the focus at every Major League stadium during the July Fourth weekend and on September 11th.”

Does that mean MLB teams will be wearing the star-spangled caps on those dates? As it turns out, yes.

Please excuse the Yankee allusion, but Rachel, you're Lou Gehrig, following Wally Pipp.
