Today's TRMS
Rachel is back in the saddle today after being carted off to TeeVee Land to fill in for Keith Olbermann yesterday. So thank you to David Bender for filling in and thank you to all of our callers. If you want to hear more of David you can catch his show Politically Direct every Sunday on Air America Radio.
On today's show Rachel will be talking to sports writer Dave Zirin about how he became a target of state police surveillance and the unceremonious way in which he found out about it. And then Paul Rieckhoff will be here discussing his latest story up on Huffington Post right now: the ongoing saga of the Pat Tillman cover-up.
- July 22, 2008

Tillman report
I'm glad that Rachel and Rieckhoff will finally talk about last week's report from the House Oversight Committee into the coverup of Pat Tillman's death and the fabrication of Jessica Lynch's story.

I grew up programmed to see Jesus as white; with Charlton heston (or some other white actor) playing Jesus in the movies (and seeing the white Jesus pictures all over the place).. But when you think about it, its kind of silly to believe that from the indigenous people that lived in that part of the world, that the immaculate god child would be born white, LOL. As a freethinker, I cant say one way or the other if Jesus ever existed.. Much less if anyone can say his/her color.. If one goes by the Christian bible, I believe it says he had the hair of the ram.. I went back to my home town (Chicago) after 10 years, and noticed the sign at father and son pizza was obviously changed so the father and son were both spanish looking.. I believe 2000 years of people making things up about the Jesus figure shapes peoples perceptions (not fact)..

By bobblerftJuly 22, 2008 - 8:33pmHair makes sense
It must have been SO messy! If you think about it, they traveled by foot and my guess is that showers and baths were not readily available in the middle of the dessert. Not to mention getting a deep tan from getting baked in the sun. But as you said, our folklore paints him white, and apparently recently showered.
I once went to mass to see a priest friend of mine. During his sermon he spoke about a battle between the Jews and I-can't-remember-who, where every time Abraham raised his arms the Jews did well. When he dropped his arms, the Jews took hits. Since Abraham was too old, two young men helped him keep his arms up. This is where my priest friend pointed out that people didn't bathe as often back then. They were also in the middle of the desert, so you can imagine that it was hot! So, my friend said, you can only imagine what Abraham smelled like! It was hard to keep from laughing.
I never thought of that... and only points out how sanitized our perceptions are.... which begs the question: is "sanitized" automatically white?

Funny how quickly you stop noticing things like oily skin and BO when everyone around you has them, isn't it? Mind you, I'm as far removed from Mr. Nature as you can get (I HATE camping!), but from those times when I've been forced into it by family or friends I've noticed you get past those issues before long....
BTW, the Romans in Jesus's time did have baths complete with hot water, and expected everyone who considered themselves "civilized", Roman or not, to bathe regularly. What they didn't have was soap - they used scented oil, and a scraper called a strigil to scrape the dirt off them.

Keeping him from editing posts isn't so great, it just makes him start another post. I'm not sure why having his stuff spread out over the thread is better than having it all in one easily skippable spot.
Here's the point: He's a troll and responding to his posts is paying attention to him. Even if you're not reading, you talking to him. Trolls are attention whores and you're giving him the attention that he wants.
If you enjoy battling him, then posting responses will probably feel very satisfying. Personally, I'd rather he gave up, so I'd prefer if people would just ignore him. That's the only strategy that's ever gotten a troll to wander off.

Frau Muth, who would stomp around the cathedral bellowing in a special rhythm; a middle-aged Ophelia; and a beautiful woman with a real knack for silk scarves (who used to hang out mysteriously in cafés but later took a turn for the worse and lurked in doorways yelling "FOTZE!" in a ruined voice). A lot of people in the Middle East use spearmint as a seasoning, very much like we use black pepper. Not sure you should judge the tomato/mint combo that quickly.

If you did not read the post before the question was why does she not have her own show ?
Reason: She is to ugly to look at for a 1/2 hour. Some of her talking points are sanguine.
Also there already is a hook faced host on the TV in Greta Van Susteren, and she has a hour show
and a bigger lisp.....

I disagree with ALL of your comments of Rachel and find them to be unnecessarily denigrating and lack in any sort of actual substance worth discussing. Actually, MSNBC has already written about giving Rachel her own show as it seems she is at the top of a very short list for the next open slot.
As for Greta, I may not like her politics, but I think that it was a shame that her bosses at FOX forced her into plastic surgery in order to be on television. This emphasis on "beauty" is ridiculous and will only be continued unless people begin to revolt. But it seems you buy into the ridiculous and shameful policy of denigrating women if they do not conform to your own standards of beauty.

By Polly TicsJuly 24, 2008 - 12:49pmWe agree.....
So we agree Rachel needs plastic surgery.
With that cresent moon face she must have painful TMJ.
I think it is good that some ugly people are getting on TV.
Look at the mess that is Keith's Olbermann teeth. And that string of spit that goes from his top teeth to the botom, and yet none of his PA's tell him to brush or get some mouth wash....
The whale that is Candy Crowely on CNN.
It would take a 12 pack for someone to sleep with Dee Dee Myers, but then she would drink it all.
Even Brian Williams has a picket fence for that mess of teeth. You would think that with that money he could at least fix his teeth..
The home wrecking whore Lara Logan, knocked up on assignment, has let herself go from her Bikini modeling days.
So there are enough ugly people on TV, Rachel has a face for radio !!!!

I just cannot believe that these "talents" don't take the time an invest in the teeth or jaw.
I know Rachel must have TMJ, templar mandibular joint syndrome to the ignorant.
This can lead to a long term Arthritic problem. With Rachel non symmetrical face she must suffer from this. I have noticed when on MSNBC she know hoe to hold her head as to not show or diminish her congenital deformation. She easily could have had orthodontia in her teens to repair this. Her jaw broken then straighten and would have been wired shut for about 3 month. This also would have made room for that swollen tounge of her and reduce she lisp.
Oddly most lisps like that appear in gay men from opening there jaw to wide to accept their partners member and damaging the nerve at the top of the vocal cords. This is not the case in Rachel, I am sure she has never excepted a penis anywhere near her mouth.
Also Rachel should get though 2 big mole looks at by a professional. Possible removed, or at lease the long black curly hairs plucked out of them. (HDTV has some negatives). Yikes.
It is good she plucks he Bert's eyebrow in the middle, but she need to thin out each side as not to look so Cro-Magnon.
Poor oral hygiene speaks volumes allot a person. If they don't care for their teeth how can they care for others ?
It is even shown to be linked to heart problems later in life. I would say 50 percent of the online TV host have poor to bad teeth.
A few examples, Lou Bobs, bottom crowded, also Brain Williams, Mylie Sirus has a snaggle tooth on the bottom right, now Billy ray should have
put braces on that tooth in cross-bite years ago. And don't tell me she does not have the money. Jewel has the snaggle tooth up top.
Greg Gutfeld, Andy and Bill all have poor teeth, yet they don't make the big buck yet because "Red Eye" is only on a 3am.
Dan Abrams teeth look like sharpened points and he deliberately hides them with his upper lip. He defiantly has had them whitened.
Joe Scarborough has some spaced out peg like teeth. Enough said about Greta's crow / under bite mess in her mouth. Bill O'Reilly's teeth are a crowded mess.
Now that Robin Meade has great teeth (allot of work), but she did not get that deviated septum fixed, that is why she talking in that lower octave husky voice. Some find that sexy, I just hear that she need to clear her throat from that phlegm.
Lou Dobbs has more black gaps in his teeth (more veneers) that the fence he wants to put up to keep the Mexicans out has less gaps....
McCain teeth are ok for a 70 something year old mouth. Obama's bottom teeth are messed up, top probably veneers, but again a public figure maybe 2 years in braces yet he never fixed them, I believe this causes his lisp or the lisp was because he is on down low, no Michelle would have caught him.
Next blog entry will be on the epidemic of lisping by news casters. It is rampant...

By dike_on_the_tubeJuly 26, 2008 - 2:01amDear dyke_on_the_tube
I have to say - my first reaction to your post was anger and disgust. But those feelings quickly gave way to puzzlement, followed by a really uneasy sadness.
I do not understand a person who comes onto blogs and derives joy from slapping people around. I really don't get it. And I'm absolutely not the only one on the blog who wonders about this. You had to go to the trouble to create a login and then craft a lengthy diatribe designed pretty carefully to hurt someone -- someone you don't even know. I really struggle with why people do this.
The best I can come up with is this (and I have no idea if it's true): a person who goes to such trouble to kick strangers in the teeth must be very angry -- maybe to the point of rage -- and must feel very powerless. If that's true, then something very bad has happened to you along the way, more likely many very bad things. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm going to pretend for a minute that I'm right. In that vein, I'm going to say I'm sorry that bad things have happened to you.
An ex-boyfriend, a Buddhist, once told me that I should not seek to harm the man who holds a gun on me and steals my car. He said that it is a very sad truth about the world that most people are -- most of the time -- doing the very best that they can in life. The simple fact is that there are people who can't do any better than brandish pistols and steal cars. This is the sum total of their power in the world. The longer I've thought about that over the years, and the longer I practice law, the truer I think it is. It gets demonstrated to me almost daily. And that's where the sadness sets in.
If you can't do any better than write posts like the one above, then I truly hope life gets better for you. I hope you can find a way to rise above the stuff in your post.
If you can do better, why don't you?

By pewpewmigooJuly 22, 2008 - 8:35pmSenator McCain's Comments
Tonight I heard Senator McCain state that Senator Obama would rather lose a war and win an election.
I reminded myself that my bedroom set was made in Vietnam. That fact brought to mind the 58,000+ names on the black wall in Washington where of course we "honor" them. How much richer would our lives and those of their families have been if they were still with us? What might their contributions have been or the contributions of their children? Alas we will never know. My bedroom set marked "Made in Vietnam" tells me they died for nothing.
When McCain admits the Vietnam war was a mistake and stops running on his war record he will indicate to me that he has learned something in 70 years. Today I think of those kids drafted off the streets, trained for 3 or 4 months and sent off to a jungle to "fight communism"
Too many of them died too far away from home for too little. There is no honor in that.
Shame on you Senator McCain.

Addressing the other topics, I do not like the fact that the keyboard I use is made in Hong Kong (Microsoft), the CPU is made in Indonesia(microsoft), and the fact that the mother board is made in Taiwan - dell/Foxconn/MSI), my Westinghouse Plasma Monitor-made in China.
The last item I used made in the US for my computer was a mouse, label Microsoft, made in usa patent pend. the circa 1980 ...and it's our fault, you! Me! all of us, we'll buy a European cars pay 4x the amount it's worth, but we won't fork over any money for goods made here because we think it's too expensive, well making sure each of us has a job, seems to be a very low price to pay in the big scheme of things...
So when we tell the Manufacturing companies to bring back out jobs here in the states, please make sure you pay full price for that hat, car, baseball glove or even the cup of soup... or your words are as empty as the box I am typing in had I not log in today. I am not on either side of the platform, just a realist.

You slay me!!!! Oh damn! Damn! Ess... I need botox to deal with the rictus...
Cor, blimey! Ess. Okay, okay...
Eppendorf is IT for pipettes, at least from my Germ perspective. And that boy band is totally affiliated with a Hessian radio station that hires its own talent: http://planetradio.de/
(planet radio is well worth a free Internet listen. We're better at music than they are, so we automatically feel superior, despite everything. No obscenity rules, gives you the louche feeling that you're integrated into the Germ teen disco scene, and their repetition rate is so high that you don't have to waste too much time before you've heard today's playlist. Plus, if you're lucky, you won't understand the ads.)

By the way, a lot of the fun Americans abroad I met in Germany were musicians helping media center Cologne while helping themselves (and getting ffffuuuullllll health insurance coverage, even drugs and teeth). Beautiful thing.

(For you non-CSI watching people and those with no TVs, they use pipettes in the lab scenes A LOT)

I can't use "The Eppendorfs" in my research, but seeing this video may well convince me that biochem/molecular bio is where it's at!

By cool_princessieJuly 23, 2008 - 2:13pmIt's possible to geek-out *too* much?
Never.
And in that vein, my best chem buddy (college pal who now also is a chem prof, back at our alma mater) very astutely pointed out that the epMotion video alludes to A-Ha's classic "Take On Me" video.

By Buxtehude_BarbarossaJuly 23, 2008 - 3:13pmso like the american public and media...
the look for who said it first, who made it first, and who claim victory first...
being first isn't what i's cracked up to be.
Like Sen. Obama, really isn't the first African American to be a candidate for the Commander and chief, did we for get he did not received the amount of delegate needed to be the automatic nominee for the DNC, in Denver they will still do the roll call. And although he is saying and doing thing in the middle east as if he were already the nominee and the elected pres, but under our constitution we can only have one president, and even though I do not care for president bush and his methods (into madness), I do not feel that Sen. Obama's actions are in the best interest of national security. if there ever was a time for Pres. Bush to speak up and do a little talking it's now.
Back to the topic I started, Sen. Obama is not the first or will he be the last African American to run or be a nominee. I guess I am really up to here (pointing to my ears), with all this first stuff... If we ourselves stop segregating everyone, maybe the masses will follow into a cordial acceptance that no matter where you are from here you are and if you are qualifies then you will be hired or elected .
BTW - while I was watching the cnn specials about MLK and also the BBinAmer. I notice that MLK was wearing a rolex, back then they were about 600 to 700 dollars (I am not saying the watch is worth that), I also notice in old tapes of Bill Clinton, that he work a Timex. So if this person wanted rights for all then why did he seem to live a more elitist life style than the people he was marching for... brings Sen.Obama to mind also when I ask this question.
So if this presidential election does not involve race, then why did CNN and Soledad O'Brien air their piece during this election season... did the idea of these two programs never cross anyones mind in the past 20 years???
again I am just a realist... (race-Korean).
