Heather Wilson (R-New Mexico) is lying!
Congresswoman (and VP Wannabee) Heather Wilson has been making the rounds this week on behalf of McCain snarking that Obama's position on getting the US and Russia off of ICBM Hairtrigger status is "a great idea but was done 20 years ago." This, she says is evidence of Obama's being a babe in the scary woods of International defense policy.
Problem is, according the many sources I easily found (Including the Christian Science Monitor) we are still on hair trigger alert and both governments have dragged their feet on stepping down. Mistrust between superpowers? Really?
Although there was movement during the Clinton Administration to establish a more layered system of alerts, no firm change resulted. Given Mr. Putin's powergrab, the situation is worthy of attention.
Could it be that Ms. Wilson thinks she can pluck something that sounds complex and obscure out of Obama's platform, lie about it, and nobody will look it up? Can it be (aw, SHUCKS!) that McCain's demographic can be assured not to employ "the Google" and they think that scaring Floria by throwing around "facts" about ICBM's is the new code for "secret Muslim?"

By luckyduckJuly 25, 2008 - 10:16amLying is Her Specialty
Her track record in lying is quite notable. She ran as someone who votes independently of the Bush Administration, but she never voted against anything sponsored by the Republicons that was actually defeated. She "voted her conscience" only when it didn't affect the party's desired result.
As for the status of our nuclear resources, just in the news yesterday, a story about a crew on missile alert status falling asleep (so maybe they aren't so alert, but they are still on hair trigger). My recollection is all the changes in the status resulted in changing the targeting so that the missiles were said to no longer be pointed at specific pre-selected targets. Is that actually better?
Heather has some questionable personal and family activities in her NM past, from her tenure in State Government....some files that disappeared, some tap dancing about how she handled those files that involved her husband; and then there was her involvement in the David Iglesias firing, right alongside Pete Domenici, her political patron.
I don't see her being a help to McCain, but hey, maybe that's a good thing. The best thing about Heather Wilson is that she gave up her Congressional Seat to run for Senate and lost the primary to someone even less likely to wind up a Senator, the right winger, Steve Pearce.

Thanks for that response, Hank. Always best to hear from the locals. Is it just me or does she also have a gift for dismissively smirking and scoffing at any opposing view. That's problably what the McCain camp like about her.

She (Heather) has a nasty smarmy smile.....and she whines.....and who could forget the fake crying when she talked about how awful the Janet Jackson "incident" was for the American public.

By nmhankJuly 25, 2008 - 5:05pmHank, you know
I just can't believe Heather is in serious consideration for veep. Between both her own and her husband's past dealings (and numerous rumors), she would be too much of a distraction for McCain. He's using her name just to get her to go out and snark for him until he announces.
If I had to guess, I think he's going for Romney or Porter.

By Polly Tics (not verified)July 25, 2008 - 4:41pmMcCain Veep
Polly,
McCain definitely has a problem with attracting all but the most virulent conservative women to his campaign, but I'm not sure He knows how badly he has distanced them with his anti-women positions that span backwards to forever, not to mention the way he's run his personal life. The more that centrist women learn about him, the weaker I would expect him to be.
So, that being said, trotting out the name of Heather Wilson, well, not a real serious name, just a little RepubliCON eyewash. But, if he somehow fools us and picks her...well, I hope he has as much luck as the last two folks who picked an obscure sitting Representative.....that would be Mondale/Ferraro and Goldwater/Miller.
But you lost me with Porter? Porter Goss? Or maybe some porter that carries Cindy McCain's baggage?

By nmhankJuly 25, 2008 - 5:01pmPorter Goss? Oh my goodness!
Sorry, I meant Rob Portman, not Porter. He WAS the Director of the Office of Management & Budget and before that he WAS "easily" elected to the House of Rep's in Ohio (until 05, I think). He also resigned from that post sometime last year for one of those unknown "family" things, perhaps getting ready for "bigger things?
Needless to say, he's very conservative and a young family man who has been quite close to the Bush family (you would think this to be a neg, but ...). He also was Assoc WH Counsel to Daddy Bush back in 1989, has had lots of diplomatic/executive/legislative experience, is from a swing state (Ohio), is very popular within the party and now seems to be one of the top contenders for veep in many reports I've read.
And I would like to add the name of Tim Pawlenty who is the Gov of Minnesota where Obama is currently leading.

By Polly Tics (not verified)July 25, 2008 - 6:13pmGoss on the Brain
I read this about Goss earlier on Center for American Progress, so I suppose that was why he was haunting my mind:
"Yesterday, House leaders announced the names of four former lawmakers who will serve on a new independent panel that reviews ethics complaints against members. The panel's co-chair will be Porter Goss, a former representative who served as President Bush's CIA director before abruptly resigning in May of 2006."
In the meantime I read about Portman, and he'd probably be more helpful to McCain that a lot of the people on his short list. Pawlenty, though, seems to have made a lot of not so brilliant statements relating to the Minn. bridge collapse. He'll be the host at the convention, however, and you know how these insiders get to be VP on the ticket.....even the bionically heartless ones.

By nmhankJuly 25, 2008 - 11:29pmPorter Goss left the CIA suddenly BEFORE the public found out
Yes I read all about how Pelosi and friends put Goss on a new ETHICS committee of all things. Our representatives in government have become so oblivious to their own weaknesses that they seem to view this appointment as a "good" thing.
I don't too much about Pawlenty, but making inappropriate remarks about disasters seems to be what the Republicans are wont to do these days. He appears to be the favorite pick among many of the insiders I have read, but I still think Romney has the $ and the "pull" to maybe win Michigan for McCain. Who is your pick?

By Polly Tics (not verified)July 26, 2008 - 12:45pmMoney, Money, Money
Polly,
I think he'll pick someone who can bring a lot of money to the campaign, so I think he'll ultimately go with Romney, unless he can convince some political outsider moneybags to come in, like a Bloomberg, or Pickens, or Buffett. I don't think any of those three would do it, but I think he'd find the money attractive......maybe he needs Richard Mellon Scaife.

No podcasts since 23 July! What is going on? I'm paying money to get The RMS and I need my daily fix! No word from customer service. I'll give it until Monday, then I'll think about canceling my subscription. To bad the fee was just charged to my credit card...I guessing there will be no refunds.

Thanks for the heads up, I wouldn't have noticed otherwise. Now I have two days worth to listen to at work tonight! No better way to wile away the early morning hours than listening to Rachel.
Yes, I agree, an explanation would be nice.

By james1707July 25, 2008 - 1:43pmHey Hank...
could you please place in the first paragraph somewhere, Heathers name, I thought you were speaking of Rachel til I got to the 3rd paragraph. thanks. otherwise good info.
Your post, I did have to read the whole thing just so I did not get confused over who was lying...
not a teacher or anything, just a reader. who was lost during the first and 2nd paragraph due to my mind swirling about trying wrap my head around the idea of who was stated lying.
I do not call out liars, because everyone has their view on things and although Heather is not my choice for reference, I do believe that when stating some one is lying, please cite reference to where, when or what moment or article in which the lie took place. it will help reinforce the nature of your claim.
[taken from above posting-- voted against anything sponsored by the Republicans that was actually defeated. She "voted her conscience" only when it didn't affect the party's desired result.] this reminds me of Sen. Obama's claims regarding his voting record. Does FISA ring a bell, the vote on added funding ring abell etc.
gotta run I am headed to sit in on an "We the People Matter meeting here in thorton park, (an enclave of highrise living structures, --known residence to yuppie n.yk'r wannabeeees.... Do we still use the word yuppie?)

By finnperkinsJuly 25, 2008 - 5:01pmSadly,...
sadly for your request, Finn, I can't get back to the post you referenced and edit it to put in Heather's name somewhat earlier...perhaps because I haven't been logged on constantly since I posted it...I'm not sure why.
Heather's campaign was based on her independent voting record, how she bucks the RepubliCON party line, but scrutiny of her record will find no votes, (with two notable exceptions in the last six months), where she bucked the party line and was on the winning end. (In my suspicious mind, I think the GOPs, particularly when they were in the majority, had a little rotating list of representatives they turned loose when they knew they couldn't lose, so these representatives could claim to be moderates.)
Senator Obama definitely disappointed me on FISA, on the other hand, his opponent disappoints me continuously. Hope your meeting went well. I'd like to hear more about that.

By nmhankJuly 25, 2008 - 5:20pmMcCain blames America First
McCain in his speech today (Fri 7/25) sounded like he was laying the responsibility for the Iraq debacle at the feet of the American people. Something like "presidents don't lose wars, nations lose wars".
This is outrageous and he should be called out by every journalist over this. It smacks of the "Stab-in-the-back legend" the Nazis used after World War One to explain away German WW I defeat, and is probably what McCain secretly believes (wrongly) about Vietnam.
Someone must call him out on this non-sense.
Please Rachel, don't let him this slide under the rug. I am listening to "Race for the W.H." right now, waiting to hear anyone mention this. This is big enough to still bring it up on Monday.

By alex_satJuly 25, 2008 - 6:29pmSounds like Hitler
After Hitler started losing WWII, and before he shot himself in the bunker, he stated that the German people/"race" was too weak to accomplish the goals he had set for it, and he would have to leave them to their fate and start over with another country.
If he hadn't been such a racist, he would have had more countries to choose from, to take over the world with. I can't think of a usable nation of blonds that he hadn't already messed with. Sweden's too small... Russia was mad... France didn't work out...
