According to an article yesterday in the San Jose Mercury-News, by way of the Washington Post...
"An alliance of nearly 100 of the nation's wealthiest donors is roiling Democratic political circles, directing more than $50 million in the past nine months to liberal think tanks and advocacy groups in what organizers say is the first installment of a long term campaign to compete more aggressively against conservatives.

Now that Air America has got me hooked on progressive radio - but, for the moment, is failing to deliver a solid product, I'm starting to listen to Alex Bennett more. He's on Sirius (which I don't have) but also on line through RadioPower.org ... I like Rachel Maddow a lot and Sam Seder is still someone I'll listen to whenever I can. But, for now, Air America's in a strange transition time and is harder and harder to listen to without Marc Maron and with Janeane Garofalo leaving soon - and Franken seeming more and more distracted. Randi and Malloy are too bitchy for me. I'd probably listen more if they gave Laura Flanders a daily show - and the Ring of Fire show is also very good.
I didn't see Alex Bennett listed as a talk show host, though. I've bookmarked the site and will check back.
As for AAR hosts, I have good and bad comments for all--except Maron for which I have no bad! I do NOT want AAR to fail, but if little ol' me or you can see the problems but the Board cannot, well, someone needs to hire me!
They could use me as Program Director up there in AAR HQ.
Alex isn't listed, you're right. But his show is on the webstream at 9 am. Good alternative to Springer and Stephie, when you get tired of them.
I love Stephanie but her show is so corny sometimes I can't deal with it. And it takes them forever to get to a serious topic. I don't care that much about her mouse problem or trees falling in her yard, etc.
Stephanie, but my operating system at work won't let me stream any of KTLK's shows. I can only do it from home, and I RARELY listen to talk radio at home.
i think they play a little bit of her show. you have to keep listening to radiopower.org though cause they don't always get the shows coordinated with their website schedule.
stephanie's co-host, Jim Ward, is a great voice guy. he's also very conspiratorial and it's fun to hear some of his theories about what's going on in the world. They do a bit called "conspiracy corner" where they let Jim ramble about things. It's one of the best parts of the show.
Including Jim Ward's Conspiracy Corner when it's aired, plus any interviews plus regular Right Wing World and Stand Up News, both usually political rather than silly. No mice/rats or fallen trees in the free BITS subscription (though I actually like the silliness first thing in the morning, sans the Tinsel Talk segment in the third hour, which is too trivial even for me) by putting stephaniemiller.com/podcasting/Rss,1/itemid,45/ into your iTunes or Juice program, or you can download directly from her site, stephaniemiller.com by clicking on the daily show section. Of course, you can get the whole show by paying for a subscription, or as with AAR shows, free via bittorrent sites.
Without Marc and soon Janeane, the AAR humor quotient is much reduced, and so since I need humor with my outrage, I'm now Stephcasting since I think Stephanie Miller is a lot funnier than Franken, though I'm happy with Randi's bitching and Malloy's fury--every now and then Malloy makes me laugh harder and longer than anyone else, even Marc, but it's only every now and then...
We like Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy in Louisiana. The more bitchin the better.
We have a do nothing Democratic Senator named Mary Landrieu in our state. We're hoping Ned Lamont trounces Joe Lieberman in Connecticut.
If that happens, we'll be contacting Mary Landrieu's office letting her know that if she doesn't start acting like a Democrat, that she's next. Landrieu, like Liberman, was against filibustering Alito.
Hey, Progressive Spirit Guy, we like Gram Parsons in Louisiana. We were wondering, have you ever heard of Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet? A friend of ours named Tom Ayres was their manager when they did an album called "Mendocino"
Tom Ayres was also who signed David Bowie to RCA Records in the early 70's. Tom Ayres owned the silent movie actress, Lillian Gish's house in Beverly Hills, and that was where David Bowie's first performance in North America occurred.
Tom Ayres was also a partner of Rodney Bingenheimer with The English Disco Nightclub in the early 70's.
A couple years ago when we started listening to Air America, the names Marc Maron, Jim Earl, Sam Seder and Janeane Garofalo had little meaning to us. Now those are names that mean a lot.
In our lifetimes we've seen a lot of things come and go that we've liked. It makes us sad every time something good ends; perhaps we don't have the right to be sad about the leaving of Marc Maron, Jim Earl and Janeane Garofalo, because they are real artists, and real artists aren't satisfied with merely repeating what they've done in the past.
here in Austin. Of course, Doug is a legend in these parts. Just shy of Stevie Ray. I had the honor of having lunch with Doug back in the early 90s. A mutual friend and I were walking in the restaurant right as Doug was, so we all ate together. And if you know Doug, it's no surprise that he sat there and talked about himself the entire time. And it was utterly fascinating! I still treasure that memory.
check out Chuck Prophet, from San Francisco. Not quite as "larger than life" as Doug, but he's also hilarious, a great story teller, as well as being a brilliant songwriter and guitar player.
you might hit on someone i'm not familiar with and it'll give me a chance to go exploring.
while we're at it, what about Tab Benoit?
and if you like the modern bluegrass that's going around right now, be on the lookout for a new release by a duo known as ASV. fantastic debut release just out.
Got the pleasure of spending time with him and push some of his records (Antone's pre Tornados.
The man could talk, especially about music and baseball, about which he knew quite a bit.
I miss him.
As for Louisiana, what was left of GP is out there somewhere on the Airline Highway buried in The Garden of Memories new the famous Swaggart rendezvous motel.
Ok, I know I've cried wolf about this but they keep promoting it and changing the time. But it seems that Maron will be on Majority Report TONIGHT (Thursday) on one of Janeane's "last" two shows (?) ...
I'm gonna get more, including an interview with John Dean.
~~"Damned right (I'm an agitator). An agitator is the center pole in a washing machine. It gets the dirt out! That's a good thing!" Jim Hightower (paraphrased)
just spent about 10 minutes or so searching that site w/ nothing resembling what you're talking about - there is supposed to be something from 5/11-12(?), but it seems to be a headline only - no content....
if it won't link - maybe more specific directions?
I should ammend my statements. I don't hate these two people. I respect them as radio entertainers. I listen to them occassionally. But they tend to put me in a bad mood so I don't listen often. I actually think Malloy is one of the most gifted radio personalities of all time. I just can't listen as often as I'd like to because there's something about him that gets on my nerves. All the yelling - especially that late at night when I can't listen loud because other people around me are sleeping. On radiopower.org I listen to malloy sometimes in the afternoon (a tape delay of the previous night's show) and it's easier to take. But not at night when I'm trying to sleep.
With Randi, well, it's like I said earlier. She'll cite sources that aren't really that legitimate like Capitol Hill Blue - which, if you look at their archives when Clinton was President, you'll notice that they published a lot of outlandish rumors involving Clinton supposedly murdering people. So I can't trust them to give me the real truth about Bush. Randi will sometimes say that this site is rumor only but her disclaimer is made null and void when she reads it on air as if it's truth. And then she expands on it, embelleshing it with her own editorializing. That sort of thing frustrates me because I think she should be better than that. Rely more on actual truth and not on rumor and innuendo.
But, hey, it's working for her. She's certainly not hurting financially for doing it the way she does it. But I'd hope for something more substantial.
That being said, again, Randi's very gifted, obviously. So's Malloy. I'm not condemning them. Just saying I can't listen to either one of them more than a few times a month for these reasons.
I agree with you! Maybe we're spoiled from Marc, the whole tone that Morning Sedition started, whatever.... but however much I agree with the content, I don't enjoy scream radio. I used to think AAR was sidelining Maron because he's kind of extreme or out there compared to some more "moderate progressive" styles, but then I tuned in to Majority Report and heard Janeane screaming "douchebag" at a caller..... At one time I thought the great strength of AAR was going to be the variety of styles. Our station plays Ed Schults who is more middle-raod middle-America style, to Maron, to Malloy, to Franken who tracks the other side and has a solid guest line-up, even though I'm beginning to agree with a lot of youse, that after Katherine left he has lost a lot. Now we have flat and screaming as our main choices. Where's Maron? Do I smell someone chopping onions???
not neccessarily Katherine. I didn't think Katherine added much to the show and her scolding Al when he tried to get a little blue always pissed me off. Maybe that was the dynamic Al wanted, I don't know. I think he needs someone more like Rachel who seems to have a better sense of humor, is a genuine leftie (unlike Katherine) and is very well informed.
put Rachel on either as Al's co-host or to replace Springer. (Give the other spot that Rachel doesn't get to Laura Flanders) ... Have Young Turks on in the morning... they might have something at AAR again.
with these folks is that they rarely have what I would describe as "conversations." It's just Malloy or Randi pontificating. Maybe they'll have a few callers who are rarely very enlightening. Franken does it, too. I like lots of interaction between the host and guests, or a co-host. Maron was good in this way, and Young Turks is good in this way, too, in that it's always a discussion instead of a sermon. Plus, I can't quite put my finger on it, but Malloy creeps me out!
Randi doesn't discuss anything. She lectures. Angrily. It's like being yelled at. Not my cup of tea. It's like being around my mother. Marc was a friendlier presence. (was...sob)
Anybody else wondering what Sammy the Stem Cell would have to say about the stem cell bill veto? Maybe we'd even hear from "Sidney, the adult stem cell" on that topic.
Very aware of what we are missing. Mickey Spillane and the Hooter's owner on the same Morning Remembrance...it would have been great.
I was was thinking the same thing this morning...what would sammy say about the veto? What would Lawton say about the veto? What would Marc the Shark say about Lebanon? We are being deprived of the funny.
Of course, one of the most underrated guys on is Mark Riley. I had to deal with the blandness of WBAI for years before Air America and Morning Sedition. Riley delivers the news and issues, and an occasional game of the dozens with Wayne Gillman in an up-tempo, entertaining way. If anything, he should be a sidekick to Rachel. If nothing else, there should be some more African American hosts. And can we please get rid of those annoying Satellite Sisters?
I'm never up that early to hear much of his show. I hear the last few minutes of it sometimes. I don't hate it. I'd like to hear more of a party atmoshere on Air America Mornings, though. Like someone else said, Maron set the bar pretty high. But there oughta be a way to have more of a fun, funny morning show that doesn't sound so flat.
Pops is great. I did love him on MS. I subscribed to the podcast of his show to retain some of that feel in at least hearing his voice.
It's just soooo boring.
The show is so structured and to say they are going to take calls and then have 2 callers because they Have to do some regular thing on the show is mind-numbing. I fall asleep on the train listening to it.
I just removed it from my downloads. I just got tired of it.
I hope they find a new way to make the show better. He is great and talented, but OY!
First of all, it's always the same people, which is a really bad sign. Second, he never let's them talk very long, not even long enough to make their point. It's all about squeezing in as many callers as possible. Granted, the callers rarely have anything great to say, but still.
The World Famous Thanks to Morning Sedition Brilliant at Breakfast http://brilliantatbreakfast.blogspot.com "Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast." -- Oscar Wilde
I remember feeling like riley should have stood by Marc during the bad times. I don't respect him. When all that was going on he just kept talking about buying his wife a new car. It made me sick. I don't like Maddow either. I can't help it. I resent her taking that slot, and, frankly, I find her mullet and double chin repulsive. I know I know. I'm horrible, but I can't help it.
I I don't gather that Maron does, either. Pops was still under contract, so he really couldn't weigh in. My hunch is that Riley was sad to see the show end, but that he welcomed the challenge of having a show all to himself, as well.
It's just part of the business, and I think Marc understood that, and so did Riley. Riley's no spring chicken, and it's not easy for older guys to get jobs in radio. I don't blame him for taking a bullet for Maron. I do think he misses him, though. He's a news guy, and he's completely out of his element. I think Riley knows full well he's like a fish out of water now.

unless you have a LOT of free time to kill. It's fun for a few weeks, and then it's like, "Is that all there is?" Maybe if you're trying to keep up with friends who are strewn all over the place, or if you are some type of performer trying to build an audience, it's worth it. Maybe if I were single I'd have a different attitude.
Of course, that hasn't stopped me from using it! It's a little fun in that it allowed me to locate friends whom I had lost touch with FOR YEARS. So it's cool in that sense. Also, for some reason I seem to be in this situation where many of my "best" friends live out of state now. Lucky bastards!!
yeah but if you're in the entertainment business, even on the bare minimum periphery like me, it's a good way to meet musicians and others - i might even have a job, of sorts, promoting a new CD, thanks to myspace.
it was a week ago today that the dream died >__< or went into a coma, whatever you prefer. and for those who don't have anything to do on Myspace, drop by Maron Fans and enjoy some of the funny...maybe leave a comment or two? vote in the poll if you haven't already. check out where Marc will be next! so much to do....at least for a few minutes. _______________________________________________ Duct Tape is like the Force: it has a Light Side and a Dark Side and it holds the Universe together.

By orbitboy2July 19, 2006 - 2:07pmstephanie's on radiopower.org in the evenings
i think they play a little bit of her show. you have to keep listening to radiopower.org though cause they don't always get the shows coordinated with their website schedule.
stephanie's co-host, Jim Ward, is a great voice guy. he's also very conspiratorial and it's fun to hear some of his theories about what's going on in the world. They do a bit called "conspiracy corner" where they let Jim ramble about things. It's one of the best parts of the show.

By ProgressiveSpiritJuly 19, 2006 - 3:25pmSubscribe to Steph's "BITS" podcasts

By ProgressiveSpiritJuly 19, 2006 - 3:54pmWe like Bitchy in Louisiana

By johnandkatheJuly 19, 2006 - 2:07pmHuge fan of Doug Sahm
here in Austin.

By orbitboy2July 20, 2006 - 12:22pmMalloy and Rhodes

Love a sheeple, if anyone's still posting!!

not neccessarily Katherine.

By pinellasJuly 20, 2006 - 11:41amMy main problem
with these folks is that they rarely have what I would describe as "conversations." It's just Malloy or Randi pontificating.

By ProgressiveSpiritJuly 20, 2006 - 9:01pmWhat about Riley?

By darkjstzJuly 21, 2006 - 10:41amRiley's call-in segments are bad
First of all, it's always the same people, which is a really bad sign. Second, he never let's them talk very long, not even long enough to make their point. It's all about squeezing in as many callers as possible. Granted, the callers rarely have anything great to say, but still.

I I don't gather that Maron does, either. Pops was still under contract, so he really couldn't weigh in. My hunch is that Riley was sad to see the show end, but that he welcomed the challenge of having a show all to himself, as well.

By orbitboy2July 21, 2006 - 11:16amWow, that's harsh
It's just part of the business, and I think Marc understood that, and so did Riley. Riley's no spring chicken, and it's not easy for older guys to get jobs in radio. I don't blame him for taking a bullet for Maron. I do think he misses him, though. He's a news guy, and he's completely out of his element. I think Riley knows full well he's like a fish out of water now.
