New Video Shows Bush was Warned about Katrina

The Associated Press obtained a new videotape containing footage of a videoconference meeting between federal and state officials on August 28th before Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. The video depicts a a grim-faced Bush personally assuring state leaders that his administration was "fully prepared" to respond to Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans, Mayor C. Ray Nagin was shocked after seeing the video. He said, "It seems they were aware of everything... so why was the response so slow?" This new tape raises many questions about the Bush administrations's response and proves all levels of government were warned about the catastrophic nature of the approaching storm and did painfully little to be ready.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the comments between you and mtmeggido on what is considered supporting terrorism. It seems to me that mtmeggidio was playing devils advocate in regards to how other people see us here in the US.
It seems to me that the issue is of how the world is viewing us and our relationship with Isreal and that the hatred that people feel for Isreal and the Jews is contributing to the terror that has been inflicted upon us because of our close association and support that we've given Isreal. It is most definately not right, nor legal. No one can justify that their God is "The one and only", because there is no conclusive proof one way or another. What we need to do is to stop coddling special interest groups by placating their every need and whim.
We need to address our needs, reinvest in our own communities and rebuild our country, especially since this administration would rather ignore the natural disasters that have happened in the southeast for the past couple of years. Florida has hardly been rebuilt after the 2004 hurricane season, and who knows when NO is going to be rebuilt. Or if ever it will be rebuilt with the aid of the government. I can only say that NO will be rebuilt because you have people who have lived down there for their whole lives, their family is from there and they don't want to be anywhere but in NO. They may have a hard time of it now, but they will rebuild, they are too stubborn to not rebuild.
If this administration wants to invest every dollar they can into the UAE, then they can pay for this war with their own money, they have enough. This is their war, they can pay for it and pay to rebuild a country. But then again, is this war about terrorism? No, it is about oil and ethnic cleansing. WASHINGTON (AP) _ In a March 1 story, The Associated Press reported that federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees in New Orleans, citing confidential video footage of an Aug. 28 briefing among U.S. officials.

The Army Corps of Engineers considers a breach a hole developing in a levee rather than an overrun. The story should have made clear that Bush was warned about floodwaters overrunning the levees, rather than the levees breaking.

The day before the storm hit, Bush was told there were grave concerns that the levees could be overrun. It wasn't until the next morning, as the storm was hitting, that Michael Brown, then head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Bush had inquired about reports of breaches. Bush did not participate in that briefing.

Joe prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

Joe drives to work in one of the safest cars in the world because some liberal fought to raise safety standards and emission controls.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with good pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some Liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC up to $100,000 because some liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from greedy, unscrupulous bankers like the ones who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe needs to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republican's might still be sitting in the dark!)

He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.

He turns on a radio talk show, the host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day)

Joe agrees, "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I'm a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have".

P.S. Someone tell "Joe Republican" to go to his Encyclopaedia Britannica and look up Franklin D. Roosevelt ( Father of Liberalism) & begin at "New Deal" programs. That's a good place to start in order to enlighten "average Joe" on american history. Pass on to every voter you know!

By the way, "Joe Republican" probably needs reminding that it was also a liberal named Franklin Roosevelt that led the Free World's armies in defeating RIGHT-WING Fascism in WW II and saving democracy so that "Joe" has the freedom to be misled by that guy on the radio. The real issue here

you know, it seems to me the issue isn't about what Bush said in terms of the levees, we all know they use language to cover their asses. What is the issue, is that he makes a promise in the tape that he clearly didn't follow up on. After that meeting, did he see to it that the mayor and FEMA etc had what they needed and were organized to handle this situation? No...and we know that from what we all witnessed on TV. THAT's the issue here. He made a promise, and then he went on vacation. Empty words...once again.

A pattern emerges

Ever have the feeling that you've seen it before? The president says, "I don't think anybody could have anticipated levees breaking" compares to the Condoleezza Rice quote after 9/11, "I don't think anybody could have predicted that ... they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile."

We now know that our government did simulations for just such a scenario, and that it was a plot of the pre-9/11 movie "Lone Gunman". We have the August 6 memo "Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in US" just like we have the video showing him learning all about Katrina before it hit land.

And while Katrina was happening, the president goes about other business acting completely out of touch with the unfolding events, just like when he saw the second plane crash into the WTC on TV and said, "That's some bad pilot." Then he waited at the known location of the school while America was under attack from the air. I wonder how many more of these "unforeseen" events will befall Americans.

Knowing things one should not

His unhurried, unworried attitude during disasters at the very least show someone who is totally diconnected from humanity and at worst indicate someone who knew what was going to happen beforehand. Maybe even was behind it himself. Why would one need to worry if he already knows that he is in no danger because he's in control and even ordered the events to take place. He knew that he was safe.

The tactic is wearing out

Politicians earn points by playing the hero after a disaster. On the other hand, the prevention of disaster can be a political liability, as people will complain about the "wasting of taxpayer dollars" for a project. Heros don't prevent tragedy. Think Gore and global warming.

Bush started out as a very mediocre president, however "lucky" that 9/11 came along and he got to act the Hero part and his popularity soared predictably, no matter the 9/11 coverup underway - ship the evidence from a Federal Crime Scene to Asia ASAP. It looks like he was going to have us pay for the same kind of tactic with Katrina and again claim "it caught everyone by surprise", then doll out disaster relief, getting the military and Halliburton involved, rolling up his sleeves for the camera and acting hero to the rescue again. Except it didn't work.

The tactic is gone

This administration is just a continuation of what had been started during "Reaganomics". The depletion of our federal reserves to be given to the special friends of BushCo.

And the way they are responding to the disasters is just a way to continue eliminating the masses and to define the lines of social standing so they can continue to validate what they are doing to us.

When are the American people going to demand accountability?

The response to Katrina (or lack thereof), and the effort to cover up the mistakes made and the incompetence demonstrated, are impeachable offenses, plain and simple.

The leaking of the identity of a covert operative, and the attempt to cover it up after the fact are impeachable offenses, plain and simple.

The illegal wiretapping of U.S. citizens without a warrant, and the strong-arm and extortion tactics employed to discourage a thorough investigation of the program, are impeachable offenses, plain and simple.

Permitting a foreign nation with ties to terror to obtain control of ports of entry into the U.S., and the denials of knowledge of the deal after the fact, are impeachable offenses, plain and simple.

Going to war on false pretenses, and the efforts made to "cook the books" on the intelligence used to justify it, are impeachable offenses, plain and simple.

It's time the American people demanded that Congress do their job and start impeachment proceedings against this President, Vice President, and the other cronies in this administration. They are more than simply incompetent, they are traitors to our nation.

"Fully Prepared"?

If the government was fully prepared for this disaster, then how is it that decisions were impaired by a "fog of war"? If the government was fully prepared then why wasn't the SuperDome adequately equipped with man power and supplies when thousands were there before the storm had hit? If the governement was so fully prepared why did it take days for real help to come? And if the President was so ready and willing to aid the gulf during and after the hurricane, why, after 6 months are we still cleaning up debris? President Bush, Michael Chertoff, and the rest of the staff in the White House should be ashamed of themselves. They are a disaster and a disgrace to America.

Of course everyone was unprepared!

Why would we assume Bush didn't know? It was all over the news... I I never did hear the news folks ask the question of what people should do if the flooding happen?

Before Blog's ever existed

It seems to me that everyone has a voice and an opinion about everything that happens these days. I'm wondering if Blogging is a good thing. I mean, it's really easy to sit here and type out my strong opinion about polotics, etc. but what ever happened to the people's voice actually being a voice. Computers have dulled the effects of our anger, our energy, and our voice. I for one think all of these opinions need to be taken to the street in protest rather than the internet for bloging. Come on people, in the 60's there was a protest for everything. It's so easy to hide behind our computer screens, in our comfortable, warm homes, and type out our meaningless opinions. The only way anything is ever going to change is not by typing, but marching hand in hand. It's time to use our own scare tactics. Scream, yell, march, stomp, etc. A movement is in order.

What good would that do, really? I agree that it's "easy to hide behind our computer screens, in our comfortable, warm homes", but frankly don't think marching or protesting will accomplish anything. Did the massive antiwar protests here and around the world stop the Bushies from invading Iraq? Did the barricaded (and illegally arrested) protestors at the 2004 Republican Convention stop Bloomberg and the NYPD from giving a showcase to the GOP? Now that the democratic process has been co-opted by big corporate money, at least we can still type out our meaningless opinions. Besides, bloggers have been at the forefront of getting out important information. We certainly can't rely on the mainstream media to tell the truth. They're part of the problem!

I agree, that these protests didn't do much. However, giving up after a few attempts is also not the answer. Bloggers have been at the forfront of unearthing important information. I think that's a great thing. I do believe that the people reading all of these blogs are all on the same side here. Maybe protesting isn't the answer, but there has to be a way that we can break the skin of the GOP. I just don't think dems on the hill have the backbone to stand up. Nor do they have a pulse on the average american. I don't know that any career politician does.

Im not being duped by my party. I don’t give a rats behind when the President knew anything. God all you people think of is conspiracy theories. Get on with your life dude; Katrina is over there is plenty of blame to go around but I DON’T CARE!!!!!! My god the government has done the best it can. Don’t worry about it.

All you guys do is criticize and complain, and never give any credit. Yeah be a man and say one thing good the President Bush has done. When Clinton was in I gave him credit for some of his policies. Show some intelligence and give him some credit, and then you might be taken seriously.

It is not your government’s responsibility to take care of you!!!!! You were born with abilities and I guess a brain to take care of yourself and your family. The government should help people with disabilities and the elderly, but that is it!!!!!

As far as I'm concerned, that is a sacred covenant between the people of this nation, and the people's government. In layman's terms, it translates to: "we're going to take care of you".

But enough of this. if you truly "don't care" about this tragedy, as you've said in previous posts, then you are dead inside, and I have no more time and patience for you.

Everyone should pray for this guy's soul, that is, pray that he gets one.

You say “it translates to: we're going to take care of you". That’s not what I interpet. Its like this. When I was a child my mom and dad took care of me, they provided me with all the essentials of life, but all the while they were training me to be responsible obey the law, respect people, and especially our leaders and to grow up to be a man. They also took me to church every Sunday (sometimes against my wants) this is where on that Sunday March 12th 1972 my soul was saved. There that answers that slur you made about me not having a soul. By the way…have you been saved ? Enough about that low slur you made about me personaly. Don’t go there dude, it’s a battle you cant win. But anyway…I became a man.. I take care of my family, help my community, and love my country. I don’t relly on your tax dollars to take care of me, and I don’t want to take care of you, until you are old and cant take care of yourself.

It is painful to read the ever-continuing theories of conver-ups,Bush "did it on purpose....he hates black people....the government should have done this and that.....Does it bother anyone that the LA state and locoal governments had reports dating back to the Johnson admin telling them that this could happen? What about the people of LA and thier politicians who did nothing to fix this problem???? Why didn't they leave when they were told? Look, I have never claimed Bush is perfect niether did I hate everything about Clinton....but to claim that this whole situation is somehow all Bushs fault is so rediculous that it prohibits any of you having any credibility. It shows a complete lack of though and intelligence (and Im sure many of you are very intelligent) Mistakes were made from top-to-bottom and go back nearly 40 years. Free Yourself from Conservative Talk Radio: 12 Steps to Recovery

Step 1: Admit that you were under the sway of right-wing, anti-democracy radicals.
This is the first step for every conservative or "ditto-head" listener on the way to recovery. It is important to understand that the people you were listening to are not "compassionate conservatives," "Republicans," or "pillars of morality." They're right-wing conservative radicals, more interested in strong corporations than strong democracy, and you must be honest with yourself about that fact.

Step 2: Realize that we can't have freedom & liberty without first building a civil society.
And civil society has certain costs, such as education, infrastructure, health care, defense, transportation, communications, a viable social safety net, and the protection of the commons, which we all agree to pay for with something called taxes that we levy on ourselves and not on our children. Only on this basis can we have individual liberty.

Step 3: Love democracy's basis in debate and respectful disagreement.
The processes of debate, dissent, and compromise are democracy's underlying strength. This may be the most difficult step for those of you who had completely surrendered to the dark side of conservatism and have labeled dissenters as unpatriotic. Admit that democracy actually requires dissent. You might want to read the words of our Founders to better understand what democracy is and what it isn't. Start with Jefferson.

Step 4: Understand that a living wage is vital to maintain a viable middle-class.
A strong middle class is vital to democracy. To say that somebody who earns millions a year by sitting by the pool collecting dividend checks "works that much harder" than a middle-class wage earner is simple nonsense. Although morality tells us that people deserve a livable wage and fair taxes, reality tells us even more starkly that without everybody having access to a good job, and in a nation where dividend-earners pay only 15% in income tax, democracy is at risk.

Step 5: Support labor unions and stop chanting "cheap labor" as the tired old right-wing mantra.
"Cheap labor" is the core mantra of the conservatives, and ultimately harms democracy. If capital can organize in the form of a corporation, and corporations can organize as conglomerates, Chambers of Commerce, and trade and lobbying associations, then labor must have an equal and guaranteed-by-law right to organize. Strong unions are the only thing standing between you and serfdom at the hands of corporate masters, and without the unions of the past there would be no American middle class today. If you have difficulty with this step, spend a week with a family living below the poverty level because their manufacturing jobs were sent overseas for "cheap labor" and all that was left was a cashier's position at Wal-Mart. You'll be chanting "livable wage now!" in no time at all.

Step 6: Stop listening to TV and radio pundits who have "amnesia" about the separation of church and state.
Their intent is to convince everyone that church-state separation was never intended by our Founding Fathers and that the United States was started as a Christian nation. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robinson not only lie about our founding fathers, but also don't grasp the lessons of millennia of bloody battles between popes, mullahs, and kings. Look at the back of a dollar bill and see "novus ordo seclorum" - "a new secular order" - and realize that the US Government is a secular democracy, not a religious theocracy.

Step 7: Stop pretending that you don't understand that government is "We, The People," and not some sort of "them."
"Drowning government in a bathtub," as conservatives have recommended, may have been a good idea in the former Soviet Union, but the United States is a constitutional representative democratic republic where our government is, literally, us. It was designed to work for us, be owned by us, exists solely by virtue of our ongoing approval, and must answer to us. The shared commons of our nation - including our air, water, transportation routes, airwaves and cable networks, communication systems, military, police, prisons, fire services, health care infrastructure, and courts must, for democracy to work well, be held either by locally-controlled non-profit corporations or by a government responsive to its citizens, with corporations barred from the political process.

Step 8: Repent from your SUV and let's start taking care of the planet we all share.
The natural world - including our water and air - is our most vital and essential commons, and therefore must be protected from those who would despoil it for short-term profit. When they poison the world, they degrade our quality of life and threaten our children's future. Begin now - by participating in our representative government - to take immediate steps to protect the commons we share with all other life on planet Earth.

Step 9: Stop listening to conservative talk radio.
Understand that talk show hosts of the conservative ilk daily demonstrate that bullying, humiliation, and the "big lie" are at the core of conservative talk radio. Turn them off, and instead tune into one of the many liberal talk shows that are daily sprouting across America, and where democracy is still alive and well.

Step 10: Help transform America back into an energy-independent nation.
Building a civilization on liquefied fossils and then thinking it will last forever makes no sense. World oil reserves are enough to sustain us only into our children's lifetimes, and then will run out. Encourage your elected representatives to help create viable energy sources that are not dependent on fossil fuels, and, in the meantime, take immediate steps to reduce use of and preserve our precious stores before they're exhausted.

Step 11: Refrain from rewriting political history.
Its now time to admit that George W. Bush and his administration have been lying to us about the war on terror, the invasion of Iraq, taking away our freedoms with The Patriot Act, and misleading the America people on issues from the environment to taxes to jobs. Know now that George W. Bush was selected not elected, and the election was stolen from Al Gore. You may now research beyond propaganda from right-wing think tanks and Faux News to understand things as they really exist in the world. Stay in touch with the many progressive news sites (like this one) and publications and encourage our mainstream media to stop being cowed by right-wing bullies and corporate paymasters.

Step 12: Be a visionary.
Once you have completed the previous steps to freeing yourself from conservative talk radio, it's time for you to share this awakening with others who will benefit from your new enlightenment. Go out amongst the "ditto-head" sheep and spread the good word of your freedom from the chains of ignorance that once bound you. Congratulations, and welcome to reality!
