Alaska Retains Title as Nation’s Most Pork-Laden State

According to Citizens Against Government Waste's 2006 Congressional Pig Book, Alaska once again holds the dubious distinction of leading all states in pork-barrel spending, as it has each of the sixteen years that CAGW has been issuing the report. Last year, Alaska drew heated criticism for the $453 million in federal funds it successfully lobbied for to build two bridges that led, essentially, to nothing. Even Alaska’s citizens were ashamed, and called for the state to put the money towards rebuilding efforts in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. State lawmakers declined, with Republican Governor Murkowski instead proposing a state-funded PR campaign to offset the negative publicity provoked by $453 million “bridge to nowhere” project. Nationwide, this year's edition of the Congressional Pig Book cites 9,963 examples of what it considers wasteful use of taxpayer funds, and points out that even though the number of pork-barrel projects has dropped by 29% for fiscal 2006, the dollars spent overall on such projects has actually increased by more than $1 billion.

Well, at least the....

....pork will keep up in the frozen north. How come no other states give their population a cut of the natural resource money collected from industries....probably because there isn't much coming in.
