Republicans Increasingly Frustrated with Bush Immigration Stance
News:
Two straight days of massive rallies around the country in support of humane immigration reform have thrown into sharp relief the failure of the GOP-controlled Congress to deliver such a measure. With the midterms in sight—and with their public approval ratings plummeting in tandem the president’s—many Republican lawmakers are becoming vocal in their disappointment with the leadership Bush has shown in crafting a solution to the deadlock. Some feel that he is instead waiting in the wings for the heavy lifting to get done, willing to step into the spotlight only once there is good news to deliver.
Well, this is one time where I don't think Bush is to blame.
The Senate had a deal on the table, and allowed it to fail because the Republicans insisted on adding 397 ammendments to the bill. The Dems. were right to not allow that to happen, and the Republicans refused to compromise. Congress has nobody to blame but themselves.

Interesting that the NY Times mentioned the Democratic success in blocking so many of these amendments but made no mention of their substance. A failure of reporting in my opinion. That information would have shed some real light on the nature of the debate and allowed an informed citizenry to draw its own conclusions about the quality of our elected leaders. You right, Reps first tried to blame Dems when the deal fell through and now they want to pin the blame on the Prez, well why not kick him when he’s down. Thank you for placing the blame right where it belongs, the Republican majority legislature is unable to pass its own high priority bills.

While the Dems. certainly couldn't do any worse than the Repubs., are they going to accomplish anything? Will they put country before party? Will they lead, or just coast along?
I guess it truly depends on who will be in the drivers seat... in the white house, and in the congress. If we have people like Feingold & Conyers calling the shots, people who aren't afraid to ruffle some feathers, we'll have some true leadership in our government.

Or worse, I suppose you'd rather pay for the incarsaration of 11 million illeagal immigrants because that is what the House bill suggests. Making illeagal immigration a felony, HA. What are they trying to do, double the prison population?
Here is an idea, why not let them become citizens so they pay taxes, so their families can move here so that their money stays in the country, so that they are guarenteed at least minimum wage. Then do something that has needed to happen for a long time, raise the minimum wage.

They are theones profitting from this so let them pick up the tab! I don't think anyone who earns under $50.000.00 per year should pay any taxes and I think expensive SUV's shoud be taxed extra because they are gas hogs, cause accidents and tear up the roads because they are so heavy! The sale tax should come down and corporate taxes go SKY HIGH!
But , once again, SECURE THE BORDER! Then we can argue about the hoops illegals will have to jump through to stay here legally.
Also, I have a school teacher friend who was teaching summer school last year to 7 year olds, many of them immigrants illegal and otherwise. For the Fourth of July she had them do an art project making little Uncle Sam hats out of construction paper and each child was given a small American Flag. At the end of class several of the students started to leave their projects behind, when reminded to take their flags home a couple piped up and said. "That is not the flag of MY COUNTRY!"
Shouldn't people who insist on breaking the law to come here at least LOVE this Country? Is that too much to ask?

No, you have to tax the rich at a reasonable rate, not SOAK them. The new citizens can make a reasonable contribution if the minimum wage is increased, and remember that their spending on cosumer goods has a multiplicative effect. And then you have to consider that they are ALREADY costing a lot of money without puting in as much as they will when they are citizens. As a proportion of the cost, it will probably be a positive change.

Yeah, that's too much to ask. We don't require natural born citizens to love the US, why should naturalized citizens be required to do more? You note, the kids might have been illegals, you say, so they may have been correct and right when they said that the US flag wasn't THEIR country's flag. When we embrace them, they may well embrace us and our flag.

The main reason they are here to to make a better life for their families. Do you think they come here because they want to lower the price of labor? That is why the corporations what them here but the imigrants do not come here for that reason.

Which is why we need to raise the minimum wage. If the minimum wage was a livable wage then it wouldn't be as big of a problem.

I disagree, I think everyone should pay some taxes except for those living in poverty. If a person is making $30,000 a year they can afford to pay the current taxes.

This I do agree with. Corporations should pay more taxes and certain products like SUV's which are not benefitial to society should be taxed, or better yet replaced.

That is a somewhat disturbing story. However, it does not represent the vast majority of imigrants. Also the kids were 7 you said? A seven year old really doesn't know anything that his parents did not teach him. If that is the sentiment of the parents that is very sad but wait a few years, those kids will become loyal Americans after they have been asimilated. When the Germans first came to this counry many of them did not speak any english and they setteled in German speaking communitties. It might take a generation or too but these new imigrants will become as American as everone else. That is the beauty of this country.
An impossible task that can never be achieved. Take the example of the Berlin Wall. Nothing can keep people from coming into this country, nothing.

At the risk of offending half the posters on this forum... Is there any chance posters could include a few paragraph breaks here and there? There is a LOT of material here and it's MUCH easier to scan when well written.
Seriously, there's plenty of good content here I'd like to absorb, but 500 word paragraphs with 50 word run-on sentences are virtually unreadable without stuggling. Proper punctuation helps to convey the ideas as well.
Don't worry about gramatical "rules"... better too much than too little. Don't be afraid to hit the "Enter" key. If you have the slightest pause in your thoughts, hit "Enter"!!
Your ideas will be clearer and more widely read.
More efficient communication can only help our cause.

You are right, our current imigration laws need to be enforced. Though I do not think it is the entire solution. We really do need new legislation to reform our imigration policy and do something about the 11 million illeagal imigrants already here. We can't export them and we cannot jail them so we should try to make them legal and get them to work for a real wage.
They aren't a problem for American workers if they will work for the same wages as American workers. I think that is one of the major problems. If the minimum wage were a livable wage and if the illeagl imigrants's families lived in the U.S. the problem would be partially solved.
There are a great deal of things that need to happen to fix this counry. There is still the problem with outsourcing of jobs that needs to be dealt with also. Hopefully a democrat controlled government would make the needed changes.

The day shifts at most slaughterhouses start at 6am. See ya then. Good pay (starting above $10/hour, with union (UFCW) benefits. Oh, did I happen to mention that even with a liveable wage and healthcare, the vast majority of teh employees in this ungodly labor intensive job are illegal immigrants? That is part of the problem. Americans of all races simply don't want to do the most arduous jobs anymore. We have been told since childhood to *better ourselves* by getting a "good" (read:desk) job to avoid having to work in a factory. Trust me, if anyone applies at a slaughterhouse, anyone , they will be hired. So why won;t Americans do this type of work anymore?

OSHA regulations and other regulatory agenies HAVE BEEN GUTTED to make them more freindly towards corporations. Remember a few years back when there was the fire at the Tyson Chicken Plant and a bunch of employees died because all the doors were locked to make sure no one smuggles a chicken out the back door? Remember that Tyson and Wal Mart all but financed Clinton's run for the presidency?
And $10.00 per hour is peanuts for such difficult, dirty work.
Let's get the regulatory agencies back doing what they are SUPPOSED to do! That ,of course, won't probably happen until bird flu or mad cow is undeniably here and then people will all say, "Where was the Government to protect us?"

I live in Nebraska, and let me tell you plenty of Americans work in slaughter houses. I will give this, there are alot of hispanics working in them but there are many natural born citizens working in slaughter houses too. They are not fun places to be around much less work at. My grandfather was a health inspector at meat packing plants for a long time. Americans will do any job, ANY JOB, if the pay is good enough. Mayben $10 an hour isn't enough for many people but there are people who will do it for that and many more would if it payed better.

I mean, you speak of their intentions and aspirations as if you were quite close to the matter. As a Social Worker I can tell you I approve Emergency Medicaid for illegals daily, I see that their children born here have medical coverage and any other benefits availble. I send them to shelters and comfort their elderly and cradle their infants while they fill out forms or fill out the forms for them if they are unable to write.

....where white people are a minority. I went to an elementary school where I was one of two white kids in a class of 30. I went to a Jr. High school where I was the ONLY white kid in several of my classes, I went to a High School where I was one of 300 white kids in a school of 3200. A lot of the kids were either illegal or the children of illegals, or the grandchildren of illegals....from the Philippines, Samoa, Tonga, Taiwan, an Indian kid who's family was run out of a red-neck town in Australia, Koreans, and you name it. My best friend is an attorney and does a LOT of immigration work. My first kick-ass job as a reinforcing iron worker put me in contact with illegals from EVERYWHERE. I have been to cook-outs in makeshift villages of homeless illegals camped on remote beaches, been to the homes of illegals who have to live 15 in a two bedroom apartment to watch the Superbowl...I brought the beer and pupus thinking they wouldn't have anything....they all pooled their money and bought the kind of beer (more expensive that their favorite) that I liked. I cried in the bathroom. Guess that makes me a bleeding heart liberal....and damn proud of it, too.

One Grandfather a Democratic Judge from Indiana, The other a worker and Union Organizer in the Lead Mines OF Missouri. Daddy was a Lawyer who died when I was 10 and Mama Taught Special Education until her recent retirement. My Brother is Doctor , my sister an MSW as am I , I attended a fairly well known eastern Women's College on an Vocal Music Scholarship. My Husband attended UCLA and is , as I've said , an Environmental trainer who used to work for Green Peace and now train Illegals in their own language in how to do Hazmat work without being exposed to things that could kill them. When we met he was working for Greenpeace in San Francisco and I was a sales rep for Estee Lauder.
The odd thing is, you have much in common with some of my clients who have done that sort of work until at about age 50 their bodies can no longer take the falls from scafolding and lifting and bending and they apply for SSI and often times can't get it because the Feds drag their feet on approving Disablity claims, they can take years and often times people have to hire a lawyer who works for them for "free" until they are approved and then take about a third of the lump sum payment they receive. Meantime, they are penniless. I've seen clients ready to lose their feet from diabetes , and they get denied! I've had a client with cancer of the face and he got denied. This is the American Dream?
And you wonder why I put my own Countrymen first?

Subject: final solution
You think the 'final solution' is the answer to the illegal immigrant problem? We have a bigger problem. Hitler did well with it for a while, but he didn't get them all. The Jews that were left were given land that belonged to the Palestinians in 1948 at the urging of England and the US. And we became best friends with Israel. That's what started this whole middle east litter box. The middle east was doing just fine until then. Until we put our nose in other people's business.
Who the hell do we think we are? We have bases in Germany, Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Cuba and Lord knows where else. How would you like a foreign base in your back yard? National pride of the citizens of these countries would certainly create ill feelings for the US and our troops there. Korea is starting to bitch about it. What gives us the supreme right to impose our will all over the earth?
While I'm at it. We supported the Shaw of Iran and pissed off the Iranians. The Shaw's gone, they're still pissed off. We supported and armed Sadam in his war on Iran. Which pissed off the Iranians even more. We even gave him the chemical weapons that he used on his own people. Which pissed off the Kurds. The Kurds aren't as pissed now since they were protected by the 'no fly zone' and developed a pretty good society. Now they have most of the oil and the Sunnis are pissed 'cause they won't get much of the oil money or much of a say in the government. The Shiites are strict old school religion like Iran and supported by Iran. They won't settle for less than a rigid Koran government. This war should never have begun and will never be won.
When the Russians attacked Afghanistan, we armed the Taliban including OBL and helped them drive the Russians out. (The Russians were not pleased with this nor have they forgotten). How did the Taliban repay us. They let OBL set up camp in Afghanistan and 9-11 happened and the rest is history. Though somewhat justified, this war will never be won either.
But history isn't over, never is. We are losing our allies by the dozens. Germany and France and many of our so-called friends wouldn't have a thing to do with Iraq. The British are getting tired of our aggressive crap. Spain, Italy and Australia are withdrawing their troops from Iraq. Russia is reverting back to a repressive state and is not happy with our condemnation of their actions. Venezuela is fed up with us and will definitely restrict our access to their oil. And poor little China is just laying back laughing while covering our massive national debt loans and watching our trade deficit racing uphill.
Our manufacturing base has gone over seas. Where are our steel mills? Our textile mills? Our toys, our computers and their entrails, our TVs, our cameras, virtually nothing is made in the USA. Even our service industry is being out sourced. Call to buy a Dell computer and you'll find an Indian or a Philippinean on the end of the line speaking broken English.
Illegal immigration although a problem, isn't our main problem. The demise of our country will come at the hands of our own government over which our citizens have no control. Our politician's quest for sustained power and wealth to sustain that power will lead us to the same fate as the Romans and other ancient civilizations who thought they were toughest kid on the block. In the end it will probably be an alliance between Russia and China that will end our happy hour. Or maybe we will just financially implode.
Like high gas prices? Want to pay for your gas with yen or rupees?
