News:
Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson was quick to reject Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s request, made earlier today, that he resign his position on the House Ways and Means Committee. In his response, Jefferson called Pelosi’s request “perplexing and unreasonable”, arguing that none of the other members of Congress currently under investigation had been asked to resign their committee positions. Jefferson went on to claim that to do so would "unfairly punish" the people of his district.
I reject . . .

If he is guilty and knows he is guilty he should resign.
I don't care if he thinks he can get away with it by hiring
a good lawyer or what his thoughts are.
If he is guilty ... be a good guy and go away.
Term limits need to be initiated.

.......should step aside for the duration. I don't know what the mechanism is for replacing a Rep. in LA, but perhaps the Governor could appoint a temporary replacement. A special election would be an imposition on the people of NOLA, given the recent troubles.

to your community for your congressman not to be able to take personal bribes and hide that money away in his personal cash stash. I hope my congressman is not being unfair to me.

Jefferson should at least step down temporarily until the legal mess is over. That would be the ethical thing to do. I guess I expect Democrats to have at least some ethics left.

.....repeat, repeat.....it's still a valid observation, and with Lay and Skilling being the newest convicts...Lay was the single biggest contributor in Bush's political history and Bushboner flew on Enron private jets in 2000 campaign...the numbers keep rising.
The Redudlicons are indeed acculturated to corruption. The inability to muster an ethics committee for over three years is indicative of the level of indifference to corruption this admuddlestration has displayed consistently.
I still say the RICOH statutes ought to be dusted off and applied to the RNC. Get them all in one big sting.

There is almost uniform agreement among Democrats that Jefferson should resign his position because of his corruption. Did you feel similarly distraught when evidence against Tom Delay/Duke Cunningham/insert corrupt republican politician here began mounting? Did you go to conservative websites and *demand* that those corrupt republican officials resign?

By rocklibMay 29, 2006 - 8:55pmRepublicans do office break-ins
If he resigns because it's the honorable thing to do, then it sets precedent and justifies an illegal raid and it will be used again.
If he doesn't resign, he looks as bad as the heavily corrupted Republicans hanging on, sinking their party ship . How neatly his entrapment works for the Republicans in either case.
I think he should not resign but cooperate with the process as honorably as possible. And he should not pretend its all a big mistake and put on a big ridiculous boasting and denial act like Delay.
Let the Repugnicanpigs struggle with the legality of yet another office break in.

By oversightMay 25, 2006 - 11:44pmThere are 2 crimes here.
I don't think Jefferson stepping down would justify an FBI break in of a congressional office. It does appear that Jefferson was caught red handed and the honorable thing to do is to at least give up committee position if not completely step down. I also think the republicons should step down should Gonzales ever decide that their illegal activity should be prosecuted as well.
Jefferson stepping down, in my mind, would only represent the appropriate thing to do in this case considering what he is apparently involved in. I believe he was asked to step down before the FBI breached separation of powers.
The FBI issue will not die I don't think and should be pursued separately. Real big of Adolph Bush to seal documents that the FBI has already perused and probably copied. Surely these documents contain leads to allow them to gather information elsewhere to allow them to continue this selective and partisan pursuit of investigation.
In my opinion, breach of our constitution and separation of powers for political reasons is a much greater threat to our nation than any congressman's personal greedy ambitions. Both should be prosecuted but we need to set priorities.
