Hastert Reportedly ‘In The Mix’ in Corruption Probe

News:
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has become involved in the ongoing corruption inquiry into members of Congress, according to ABC News. Though both Hastert and the Justice Department have denied that Hastert is a target of the investigation, ABC insists that high-level officials have confirmed that the Speaker is “in the mix”. At least part of investigators’ interest in Hastert apparently centers on a letter he wrote three years ago, urging the Interior to block the construction of a casino that would have competed with others operated by clients of lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Hastert received upwards of $100,000 in donations from Abramoff and his tribal clients between 2001 and 2004.

Hastert is a target

Officials said the next logical investigative step would be for the FBI to seek a wide range of documents from the members of Congress named by Abramoff, including letters and business documents.

A spokesman for Hastert said the office had received no subpoenas or requests for documents.

From Hastert:
Ron Bonjean, Communications Director for Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert issued the following statement regarding the ABC Nightly News story that aired this evening:
“The ABC News report is absolutely untrue. As confirmed by the Justice Department, ‘Speaker Hastert is not under investigation by the Justice Department.’ We are demanding a full retraction of the ABC News story. The Speaker’s earlier statement issued today accurately reflects the facts regarding this matter.

This is getting very interesting...

The Justice Dept. has officially denied that Hastert is a target of the investigation. They NEVER do that, they usually issue a "no comment" or say they can neither confirm nor deny it.

Brian Ross at ABC didn't make this story up. He stands behinds his sources, and so does the network.

Remember the Jason Leopold story on the Rove indictment? He and truthout stand behind the story, and the sources as well.

Now, I'm really not the conspiracy theory type, but does anybody wonder if false info is being fed to the MSM and alternative media so that the neocons can paint them all as the "liberal media" again?

Just a thought.

I suspect the stench ..........

...........of Ambramoff will foul a lot of people. From what I have heard so far, there isn't likely the required quid pro quo between the letter Hastert wrote and the donations. So, he is just getting a pro forma once over by the DOJ. But, as Rummy says, "WHO KNOWS?" Stay tuned.
