Oil Isn't The Answer

By Ring of Fire

Since the end of last year, we've been flooded with camera shots of Bush walking around in what looks like a lovers' embrace with dozens of Arab sheiks.

You can be pretty certain that every time Bush kisses the cheek of another Arab prince he has to feel regret that he ignored the advice of economists, think tanks and consumer groups that seven years ago warned him that America needed to save itself from imported oil dependence.

Countries all over the world are figuring out that oil dependence creates economic disaster for the needy types who are counting on billionaire sheiks to give them a break.

There are at least two parts to the problem:

First, Arab sheiks are running out of oil. The term peak oil is a reality that this administration has known about for seven years. They've known that out of 60 of the world's top oil producing countries, 50 have completely run past their peak production capabilities. Production is in an irreversible free fall. It is a development that oil royalty won't acknowledge because they want the US oil addiction to last as long as possible.

Second, the idea that the US can drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and solve our oil impasse is bogus, right-wing radio hype aimed at blaming gas prices on the Democrats.

The truth is that it would be 15 years before any ANWR oil could be pumped from the ground. The impact of that ANWR oil would decrease the price of oil by a paltry 75 cents per barrel, according to the government's own studies. America blows through 20 million barrels of oil per day. ANWR sources would only provide 800,000 of those barrels and we would still be in the place W was told we were heading seven years ago - laying prostrate and pleading at the feet of billionaires in white robes.

In the 1970s, Iceland was 100 percent dependent on outside sources to meet energy needs. It was the poorest economy in Europe because of that endless economic drain. Today Iceland is energy independent. Home heating is done geothermally, and solar, wind and hydro energy are primary energy sources minimally supplemented by fossil fuels.

Six years ago Sweden followed suit by announcing that by 2020 they would no longer be dependent on fossil fuel. Last year Israel proclaimed that their energy infrastructure would be free of the economic drain of fossil fuel imports by 2025. The oil that OPEC controls first started developing when dinosaurs were alive and well. Today, a different kind of dinosaur still roams the earth. They are alive and well within the ranks of this administration that relies on Jurassic, dated thinking to solve America's most serious problems.

The solution to energy dependence is not found in places like ANWR. The solution certainly is not to plead with Arab sheiks like the pathetic beggars we have appeared to be recently. Instead of embracing Middle East dictators and hoping for the best as we have for almost eight years now, it's time to accept and embrace the good advice that W has for so long chosen to ignore: End our oil addiction.

Stuff, Nonsense and Downright Stupidity

This is the epitome of the thinking and (in)action that got us in this mess to begin with. Here are a just a few of the pertinent facts:

1. "15 years to get oil out of ANWAR". Correct - which is why Bill Clinton vetoing the bill to start drilling in 1992 is "here we go again" in 2008.
2. Absolute ignorance of how futures contracts work. You do realize (gues not) that oil futures contracts extend out 10 years (or more) - so immediate plans to commence drilling & exploration would reduce futures contracts and have a ripple effect down through the present price of oil. Do we teach Economics anymore or is everyone just ognorant of financial markets?
3. We currently have a 200 year supply of oil in shale. Thank you again Congress for forbidding the drilling and production here. Last benchmark I read was that shale oil is economically viable at $75 a barrel.
4. If we tripled current wind, biofuel and solar energy production, we would then be producing about 3% of our energy needs. There's a realistic alternative.
5. Ted Kenedy is blocking wind power, greenies are blocking wind farm in Montana as well as an electric line bringing solar produced electricity from the Mojave to California. And in my own state, Gov Paterson has just deep-sixed a proposal to build an LNG terminal in Long Island Sound.
6. We have another 200 year supply of oil in coal gasification.

And finally - oil is NOT just an energy source - think of all of the vinyl plumbing, plastic wrap, automobile weight-reducing plastics, computers & keyboards, CD's, pharmaceuticals, etc. that are oil-based manufactured products and think of what life would be without them.

OK - let's give tax breaks on fuel efficient cars/trucks, build a hydrogen based infrastructure (environmentally sound, quiet, and limitless fuel) - say a modest start of $50 billion in oil profits perhaps?, and tax the crap out of any personal use auto/SUV getting under 25 mpg.

But "oil addiction"? Spare me - that's as stupid a statement as "water addiction". We will need oil to sustain (never mind grow) our present economy - in hundreds of ways.

I think we can safely assume that if we give ourselves a hundred years or so to find energy solutions that's a reasonable approach.

Hey idiot

Did you even read the entire article, or just cherry pick the bits you wanted to dispute?

The impact of that ANWR oil would decrease the price of oil by a paltry 75 cents per barrel, according to the government's own studies

Please note, that is 75 cents per BARREL not per GALLON. The reduction in price of gas translates to literally a couple of pennies!

So lets fuck up ANWR irreversably to save us a couple cents on gas. Makes perfect sense, right? And what about the thousands of drilling rights contracts the oil companies already have? Big Oil doesn't want to DRILL in ANWR, they just want the RIGHT to drill there. By keeping supply tight, they can keep prices high. And when all the current places we already have straws in the ground run dry, then they will start tapping into other locations that we've given them the rights to (i.e. ANWR).

-- McCain = Four more years of the same --

Not even worthy of a response

This is such an ignorant pack of ill-informed lunacy that no response is called for. Perfectly illustrates the type of thinking that got us to this position and will keep us there.

Clearly you know sub-zero about the oil industry, geology, government/EPA requirements before drilling, futures contracts, basic economics or - well hell, maybe you know how to find your own head with both hands, but that's about it.

Hint: it's located in that deep and dark place between your legs.

Care to refute any of my

Care to refute any of my facts (or those in the article) with any of your own?

Didn't think so...

-- McCain = Four more years of the same --

First of All - you need to Accept "Facts"

Most of what is posted here to date is wishing, hoping, non-substantiated "so-and-so said", blah blah blah.

Here are the facts:

1. The US has more shale oil than the entire Middle East pool oil - more than 1 TRILLION barrels. Approximately 200 years worth.
It is economically recoverable at $75 a barrel.
Congress just put a moratorium on shale oil drilling (Canadians have been doing it for years)
We buy a lot of oil from Canada. Thanks US COngress - big help.

All of the above are subject to some adjustments depending on your source of info - but the basics are true and undisputed.

2. As long as you have "green" groups and liberal "icons" like Ted Kennedy fighting every proposal to set up wind or solar energy you can kiss that "solution" good bye. Every major solar/wind project in last 5 years delayed.

3. Most of the "10 years" that folks on this blog complain about taking for drilling oil to market is due to the years long procedures of EPA, lawsuits, Federal requirements, etc. You want oil in 4-5 years, knock off the paper BS and make the oil companies triple indemnity for any environmental damage.

4. The major alternative proposal to oil energy - nuclear - takes 10-15 years to construct and bring on line. See number 3 above.

5. A great deal of oil is used in the manufacture of, among other items, plastics used in car bodies to reduce gas consumption. There is no economical substitute for this unless you want to use brittle (and expensive) fiberglass. Oops, sorry, fiberglass contains oil-based hydrocarbons as well.

6. No refineries have been built in the last 30 years. So we not only import Oil, we have to import finished products as well.

6. Congress has taken exactly 0 action on three things that would help immediately:
- tax crap out of any non-commercial vehicle not getting 25 MPG
- Mandate $10 Bn investment in hydrogen gas infrastructure (3-5 years plan for Cal, NY & Ill)
- $10 Bn investment in hydro-cars, trucks, trains, buses, whatever. Honda can do.

Did I mention "start drilling today to bring down price of oil futures"? This is not a "fact" of course - it's just the way markets work.

Wind power will work the day we put a windmill in front of Ted Kennedy.

By houndogJune 23, 2008 - 3:46pm

Meanwhile we will watch what happens if the Saudi's increase output. The cost of getting that Saudi oil to market is small compared to what it would take to develop the oil fields in Alaska. I'm betting when the output from Saudi Arabia increases the price will not drop that much. Same thing for Alaskan oil if that is taken.

Furthermore proponents of drilling in Alaska also bitch about taxing the oil companies record profits. In other words they want to hand them oil that is on public land. That oil belongs to all of us and yet a few are going to enjoy large Christmas bonuses should we expoit it.

Finally Exxon has proven that it will do anything it can to nickel and dime clean up efforts in the event of an oil spill. They lost their right to drill on public land in my opinion.

Oh yeah, before we start using oil on public land, we should make the owners of oil wells in Texas uncap their wells. They are holding them back for value in future profits.

Maybe you'd better check with the oil companies about your

"facts". You claim it is paperwork that makes them take so long to get oil to market. According to the oil companies, when confronted with the fact that they haven't even drilled on 50 million of the 70 million acres of federal land they have leased, they said it could take years before they would even start to drill on that land. They talked about how many years it would take to do the exploration, etc. In other words, they have people like you buying into their "big bad government and environmentalists won't let me drill" bullshit, but they have come right out and admitted that they have purposely not drilled on most of the land they have leased, and may not do so for years, of their own free will. No one is stopping them. They don't want to drill because they want to keep supply low and prices high.

As for Canadian shale oil.....did you know that the Canadians put 2 million barrels of oil from that oil shale into a pipeline? Know where that oil goes? China. Same place the oil from the Alaska pipeline goes. Big oil and repubs couldn't give two shits about national security and energy independence. The oil goes to whoever gives them the most money.

Calm Down Dude - you're not even making sense

"As for Canadian shale oil.....did you know that the Canadians put 2 million barrels of oil from that oil shale into a pipeline? Know where that oil goes? China. Same place the oil from the Alaska pipeline goes. Big oil and repubs couldn't give two shits about national security"

Dude, the oil goes to the market - same as corn, coal, soybeans or any other commodity.

If you want the oil to stay in the US, you've got to almost double our refining capacity (currently about 16 Million bpd, as opposed to consumption of 25 Mn bpd).

Does anyone have any interest at all in facts, economics or fucking reality? If uninformed ideological bullshit on this topic were a biofuel this blog could fuel Detroit.

The oil isn't going to China for refining

It's going there to be used. The only way that oil would stay here is if we paid more than China for that oil. Even if we had the refineries, those refiners would STILL sell the oil to the highest bidder. China paid more because they are flush with cash, OUR cash, and so they are willing and able to pay more than we are. And that is on all commodities, not just oil.

I wish we hadn't turned ourselves into a beggar on the world stage, but we aren't much better than the USSR in its end days. We have a strong military, but like the soviets, our economy is faltering. We have bankrupted ourselves, and now we will pay the price.

Again, More BS

As of March, the latest data available, U.S. oil refiners were exporting more than 1.8 million barrels a day of crude oil, gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other refined products. The top five destinations for U.S. fuel were Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, Chile and Singapore.

Check it out - NOT ONE DROP OF OUR CRUDE GOES TO CHINA.

The location of refineries plays another role in exports: Not all refineries in the United States are U.S.-owned. For example, Venezuela owns the three CITGO refineries in the United States. Most of the 750,000 barrels a day of fuel produced at those refineries is sold at the nation's 14,000 CITGO gas stations, but about 30,000 barrels a day is shipped back to Venezuela, where you can fill up for the government-subsidized price of 19 cents a gallon.

It’s also true that the U.S. exports crude oil — but only little. According to the latest Department of Energy figure, about 29,000 barrels of U.S. crude left the country in March — and all of it went to Canada, which sends roughly 2.5 million barrels day our way.

The exports to Canada represent a small part of the output of Alaskan oil that can be cheaply shipped to nearby parts of Canada.

As for your other "Fact"

"The truth is that it would be 15 years before any ANWR oil could be pumped from the ground."

Pruhoe bay, Alaska: Oil was discovered in 1968. Drilling started in 1969, completed in 1970. Oil started through the pipeline in 1977. Not exactly 15 years, is it? Particulalry when 5 of those years were due to pipeline construction.

As for your "75 cents" argument - here's the price reality. In 2006 the Alyeska pipeline was shut for repairs & maintenance:

Oil prices jumped by more than $2 US a barrel to $76.98 on Monday following news of the production cut. The current pump price of a gallon of regular gas was $3.04 US on Monday, close to the high of $3.06 US, hit last year during Hurricane Katrina.

BP said it didn't know how long the pipeline repairs would take.

Your "facts" such as they are, have no basis in reality or history.

Can't you at least Google or something before you write something.

The technical term for this is "research".

So I guess the report from the Energy Department, the BUSH

Energy Department, is a lie? That's the source for the 75 cents per barrel figure, and it was just released last week.

As for the price jumps when sources are temporarily shut down, we all know that prices jump for the littlest thing, but you don't see drops of anywhere near the same magnitude when supply rises.

And the time needed to get the first drops of oil from ANWR? Those figures come from oil industry experts, not some environmentalist wacko group.

I would love to tell all the oil companies to shove all that oil up their asses, and the same with the coal companies, some of the biggest robber barons in the history of this country. I want to see alternative energy sources that will put Mobil/Exxon execs on the streets begging for table scraps. They are the scum of the earth, no better than the tobacco company execs that kept saying that smoking was safe when their own research showed just the opposite. There is a special place in hell for them, right next to Bush and Cheney. Burn, baby, burn.

Close the Enron Loophole and you will see an IMMEDIATE

drop in the price of oil, according to the Senate testimony last week of the former head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He said it would drop at least 25%, and said some estimates put that at 50%. All that for not a single shot fired, not a single well drilled, not a single bit of environmental harm, and not waiting for 10 years to see the results.

Oil companies have absolutely NO incentive to increase oil supplies. Simple supply and demand says that if you increase supply, the price will drop. Why would the oil companies want to do anything to cut into their record profits. The game they play is to see how high they can get their profits without driving the demand down too much. Currently, they must be doing a pretty good job at that game, as Americans drove 20 billion miles last year due to high fuel prices, but the oil companies were still able to make record profits.

The oil companies have plenty of leases on land where they haven't even drilled. Until they use those leases, I don't even want to hear them coming back and begging for leases in ANWR and offshore.

Not even worthy of a response

Good. Then we won't have to listen to your drivel anymore.

I don't have time for this crap BUT:

1) FULL EXPLOITATION OF ANWAR will still have virtually NO affect on global oil prices... ESPECIALLY a decade from now... YOU CAN'T DRILL YOUR WAY OUT OF THIS...THERE IS NO QUICK FIX... WE HAVE HIT THE WALL.

2) That's just bullshit. You may be confusing oil leases with oil commodities futures.

3) Sure, you could exploit increasingly inefficient oil resources like tar sands and oil shale... until you are pumping 10 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere to supply one quart of $40/gal. gasoline...

... I saw a guy snort some spilled coke off a filthy carpet once. Yeah, I suppose you could go that route.

Face it... IT'S OVER!

4) "If we tripled current wind, biofuel and solar energy production...... Uhhh, YEAH... Our CURRENT wind, biofuel and solar energy production... thanks to RONALD REAGAN and the conservative (read that corporate) revolution.

IF WE HAD FOLLOWED CARTER'S LEADERSHIP, WE WOULDN'T BE IN THIS MESS... WE'D BE A STRONG ENERGY INDEPENDANT NATION LEADING THE WORLD THIS VERY FUCKING DAY.

5) I'm with you on this one... SORT OF... I won't debate whether Nantucket Sound is the right place for Wind Turbines, but in general, Americans will just have to get used to wind turbines like they once had to get used to TELEPHONE POLES.

As to the LNG terminal in Long Island Sound... Why don't you just convert Manhattan's Central Park into the world's biggest Nitro-Glycerine Factory?... YOU'RE AN IDIOT!

6) Coal gassification?... Sure, I'm down with that... RIGHT AFTER WE DEVELOP CO2 SEQUESTRATION TECHNOLOGY and not one second sooner.

Yeah, the "Obama Nuts" screwed things up by winning

the nomination fair and square. How the hell is that even possible, right?

Nice to see you plan on keeping your losing streak alive by voting for McCain in November.

McCain is most Qualified?

Why? Because Hillary said so? The man admits he should know more about economics. His strong point in supposed to be the Middle East and he doesn't know a Sunni from a Shiite. He makes no pretense that he will nominate any but the most extreme of conservative judges. Crashing 5 planes does not make him qualified to be president.

Leaving, Uff?

Your'e gonna miss a helluva time!

Rap artists?

Gangsta rap is the fault of the White Man... white record producers, white marketers, white kids in the suburbs that buy the cd's.
There is a lot of hip- hop out there that deals with politics, culture, and social issues, but you won't see those at WalMart-
young people in this country have been trained to be nihilistic and materialistic by a rampant consumerist culture. You know, do what you want, take all you can, don't give a shit about anything meaningful, just that empty shit like rims on your car and chains around your neck.
Is it any wonder gangsta rap sells?
BTW hip hop has become the most widely listened to form of music in the world.

GEEZ

I GET IT NOW , I AM NOT A DEMOCRAT IF I DO NOT VOTE FOR YOUR SUSPECT CANDIDATE OBAMA ,, ALRIGHTY THEN, ANOTHER LOONEY COMMENT BY ONE OF YOU OBAMA NUTS...

No, the looney comment was made by you

You said that since Hillary didn't get the nomination, you'd vote for McCain. The only way I would ever vote for a candidate is if I thought they had the right policies. If my candidate isn't the nominee, that doesn't mean I go off and vote for their opponent, like some kind of spoiled 5 year-old.

If you don't like Obama, then just don't vote. In 1984, I couldn't stand either Mondale or Reagan, so I didn't vote for either. I was an Edwards supporter this time around, but I'm not voting McCain just because he didn't get the nomination.

In case no one told you, voting is for adults. You've proven you don't meet that basic qualification, so do us all a favor, and stay out of the voting booth until you can act like an adult. We've had enough problems the last 7 years with an immature fool running this country.

Poor widdle Michelle...

You give yourself away, all too easily. You are a republifascist in Dem's clothing. No Dem could possibly sound as mechanically loyal to the talking points as yourself. I bet you were all about Hillary in an effort to promote your hero Rush's "Operation Couldn't Care Less." Big success that was, Q-ey.

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.

Ok, you CLAIM to have

Ok, you CLAIM to have supported Hillary. And since Obama and Hillary have nearly identical positions on health care, getting out of Iraq, getting rid of Bush's tax cut for the rich, and most other issues, WHY would you NOT support Obama?

Hell, even your candidate Hillary endorses Obama.

I think this exposes you as a Repub.

Iraqi official opens fire on visiting U.S. troops, killing one
By Hannah Allam | McClatchy Newspapers

BAGHDAD, Iraq — One U.S. soldier was killed and five others were wounded today in a bizarre shooting incident near the town of Salman Pak, south of Baghdad, according to U.S. and Iraqi authorities.

Iraqi authorities said a member of the town council, which is part of the U.S.-allied Iraqi government, carried out the shootings,

An Iraqi police captain, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident, said local council member Raed Hmood Ajil opened fire on the U.S. troops for unknown reasons and was killed at the scene by American forces. The account could not immediately be verified.

The U.S. military could confirm only that "initial reports indicate one Coalition forces (soldier) killed in action, five Coalition forces soldiers wounded in action and one enemy killed in action" at 1 p.m. today in the Salman Pak area.

U.S. and Iraqi authorities are investigating.

"NASA warming scientist: 'This is the last chance'
By SETH BORENSTEIN – 11 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Exactly 20 years after warning America about global warming, a top NASA scientist said the situation has gotten so bad that the world's only hope is drastic action.

James Hansen told Congress on Monday that the world has long passed the "dangerous level" for greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and needs to get back to 1988 levels. He said Earth's atmosphere can only stay this loaded with man-made carbon dioxide for a couple more decades without changes such as mass extinction, ecosystem collapse and dramatic sea level rises.

"We're toast if we don't get on a very different path," Hansen, director of the Goddard Institute of Space Sciences who is sometimes called the godfather of global warming science, told The Associated Press. "This is the last chance.""
